It is interesting, although this is the first place I've ever heard people use the word "hipster" in it's modern usage as a good thing. Where I'm from, calling someone a "hipster" is akin to calling them a pretentious arse.

Well, I think most of the people posting in this thread are Americans, and we do things a little differently(and, sometimes, wrong) on this side of the pond. The use of "hipster" is a good example.

We may need an "etymology" thread for the discussion of things like this, if it's warranted.
Meh.

This is like someone taking pride in being a nerd would be considered by many as being someone who is gross or perhaps uncouth with women.

It's someone taking pride in their stereotype. I see little wrong with it, if you look up the urban dictionary definition of hipster it's quite friendly.

Ok can we please get back on topic.  If you really want to debate the history of the word "hipster" then make a thread on it

(sorry if i came out harsh but im kinda in a bad mood)
Remember that time with that thing when it ran to that place that was in that city and then exploded.  There was also that time when the other guy with that birth mark who killed that one but the other day when that thing happened to that person.

do you remember?
if you do kudos

Over my dead body. Iron & Wine are good.

Also, I'm confused....what exactly constitutes a "hipster" band? Is it just a band that isn't mainstream? Because that covers about 90% of all music today if that's the case.

Iron and Wine are indie music, which is the typical flavor of a hipster band.

no just bands that if you go up to some one and say "you ever heard of _______" and they say "um what? who the hell are they?" (this is what my friend said when i asked him about Pain

this is what my friend said when i asked him about Pain

My love for you grows each time you help me preach the word of our good Saints Dan Lord and Mike and Sara Milewicz.

Oh, and Pandora turned up a band called Hawaii Mud Bombers for me a month or two ago on one of my stations geared after Pain's "In a Band." They're pretty good, but I haven't listened to a ton of their stuff.
Meh.

That's pretty vague and objective. I mean, I could ask many of my friends - most of whom aren't musically minded - about bands I listen to; 99% of which they'd have never heard of. Whereas if I asked another friend from my Uni course (I studied music) about them then he'd probably know them all.

By listing an artist here, other people now know about, instantly making that band/artist not hipster anymore.

Also, to me, hipster music needs to have a certain kind of message. Preferably a vague one that you have to really think about to realize.

Pain.
Pain is a hipster band like no band has ever been a hipster band before.
I think.
Meh.

I've checked out this "Pain" band...they just sound like Bracket crossed with Chixdiggit....entertaining but hardly anything revolutionary.
