hey you've got the beginnings of great art here, but if I were you I would check out some online tutorials on anatomy and drawing anthro heads. It also may be a good idea to take pictures of your pieces in very good lighting if they aren't digital. Other than that, just keep practicing and trying out new ideas! :D

so i was asked by some friends to show how to blend color in digital software. they're not on this site but i figured why not post it here anyway? it might help someone out.

so this is a "do this, not this" type thing.

DO: manually do blending and shading by using low brush opacity/flow.
DON'T: just blotch in some color, blur it, and call it a day.

why? well not only is it lazy, but you're essentially letting the computer do all the work. DON'T LET THE COMPUTER DO THE WORK FOR YOU. AS SOON AS YOU START DOING THAT, YOU'VE PRETTY MUCH GIVEN UP ON YOURSELF. the computer is a tool, a medium. don't let it do the work for you. it's tempting and it saves time but ultimately it's lazy and you're not gonna truly learn how to shade and blend by just smudging and blurring. you're hurting yourself by doing so. you WILL NOT grow as an artist.
and this may be a personal opinion, but blurring the stuff just makes it look plastic in the end and then your shading style looks exactly the same as the other 3949034 artists who just use blur. it's not unique looking.

the shading in the drawing above, btw, was done super quick and i didn't have a lighting reference or anything so it was all done from my mind, so it's certainly not 100% perfect due to that, but i just whipped up that shading super quick for the sake of showing the people who requested the tutorial how to blend + then apply it to a drawing.

i made a video tutorial too, here's the part 1 (i have part 2 recorded but since videos take a while to render i won't have it up until tomorrow):

So I was looking around Google for some 'How to draw anthro stuff' and I stumbled across this:

 http://hippie.nu/~unicorn/tut/xhtml/

seems really useful... (also im new, so im hoping i did the link right)

---

Also I drew my fursona for the first time (or anything anthro for that matter), how'd I do?

Again I'm new so i hope the picture works!

Relax and enjoy yourself.

Take as long or as short as you need, especially if you're just starting out.

Keep your art in a journal or in some setting where you can look back later on it. It'll be surprising how much you improve over even just a year...

Just a tip about if you want your art to be more noticed.
If you're on Deviantart, try submitting your art to a lot of groups. You'll definitely get a bit of attention.

Hey there, id like a critique please..? I'm growing disappointed with my digital art and would like some tips on how to improve lineart + shading. I use DrawCast, SketchClub, and ProCreate. My gallery is here:

It's really bad but I tried. If anyone has some tips that'd be nice, thanks.

This thread has been sadly ignored

Well, I'll answer this anyways ^^ I'm not too great at painting myself, but some ideas for you, try perhaps lightly sketching out the outlines or the linart of your shape if you want the lines to be tighter and not as loosely sketched out, or if you want it even more defined, draw it out, and outline it in a water proof marker

Or, if you want to keep it loose, then just for the water colors themselves, take it slow, maybe use a little less water each brush stroke, get the colors wet enough to use yes, and if you want a color more watery/paled out, then keep adding water a little at a time, but just looking at the stray black, I'm guessing you were either doing fast brush strokes and one went awry or you were using a lot of water and the color ran down the page.

Another thing perhaps to consider, start light and build up on it, it's time consuming, but it might help with the uneven shading, use a light watered down version of the color, do a wash of the painting, then where you need darker/more color, add to it, making it a little bit darker at a time.

That's actually a nice bird though, maybe I only say that because I can't paint but it's cute  :lol-fox:

Yo,  could really use a critique. I feel my art has been really lacking lately. If anyone could quick look at my FA gallery and give me a critique on what I need to improve, that would be great.

How do you make lineart cleaner looking and more connected? Especially with thin lines, I have trouble connecting them so I just leave my art as sketches

My stabilizer is around 5 and I use SAI ;; please help

Put the stabilizer at 10-20
20 is the setting I use now
Do fast long strokes and just erase a lot of excess
It takes some practice so don't worry if it still looks a bit messy the first time around
