A Note About Double-Posting
« on: July 12, 2011, 09:15:51 pm »
Since there seems to be an increase in this lately, I wanted to take a moment to remind everyone that double-posting (posting multiple times in a row with no one else posting between) is against the site rules, both as a spam-control measure and because there's really no need for it.

I also wanted to let everyone know that when we have to merge double-posts, it's not a simple process.  There's no "merge posts" button.  Every time you double-post, a staff member has to:

1.  Edit the second post in the series, and copy its contents, to make sure any BBCode is properly transferred
2.  Edit the first post in the series, and paste the second post into it
3.  Leave a little note so people will know why it was edited, and save the post
4.  Delete the second post in the series
5.  Repeat for each additional post that needs to be merged, in cases of really ridiculous multi-posting

When this has to be done multiple times a day, every day, like it has been lately, it gets pretty time consuming.  So please, stop double-posting, edit your posts instead.  Especially people who've been here more than a day and really should know better.

Thanks.

I don't see any reason for anyone to double post at all. Unless it is a staff run thread that receives updates or whatever, or something similar, like an art thread.

I would imagine that would be because posts worthy of deletion are often either entirely offensive/hurtful, poorly spelled, off-topic or are small and virtually pointless. Posts like these are not redeemable by moderators/administrators and they highly effect the quality of everybody's time on the forum. Were as, double-posts are of course redeemable by moderators/administrators, are often worth staying on the thread and are also often accidents or are done by newbies who are quite new to using forums.

Deleting double posts are likely to cause confusion, frustration and It does not really give members of the site (new and old) a good impression of the site's staff if they are too lazy to merge two posts. By no means am I stating that double posts should be tolerated. If a particular user often repeats double-posting, I only think that it is fair to give them a severe warning. I just do not believe it is fair for mods and admins to delete a double post which is redeemable and serves some form of contribution to a thread; just because they cannot be bothered to merge it, themselves.

Forums in general need to plugin. SMF isn't the only one with this mis-feature/design issue.

Surely it's not impossible to add a detecting pair of buttons/etc that merges two posts when selected, and allows a rationale? Look at that: tap! tap! type, click! Done!

We have reached an era in computing where concepts either don't occur to who it matters to, or else are not implemented the way they should. That is no fault of this forum's staff but may be worth passing along to all over the place.

Edit: Likewise, an era where many of the people with the ideas either cannot get enough attention from the people with the needed experience, or else have no experience to use to do it themselves.

Is it okay to double post in an art thread? 'Cause I don't want to wait for someone to reply, and sometimes no one ever posts on my threads after I post a drawing

Yeah, I have been double posting just for the sake of updating my thread, and it's kind of redundant to keep adding to one post if the art isnt relevant to the other art, haha. Plus, it helps me log when I upload art, so is this still ok?

I think the main paint of double posting is to prevent post count inflation and clutter. In other words, use your double post sense.

In this particular case it's typically ok if you're posting new art and some time has passed. We don't want people's work to get buried and no one to see your new stuff so double posting to show off a new piece after a day etc is usually ok c:
