Do you name your computers?
« on: February 14, 2012, 01:14:00 am »
I just like to give my computers (not only computers lol I name a lot of things) a name so I don't have to call it "my computer". I called my previous computer O'dell, just for the lols, and my new computer is gonna be named Tardis. Because it is awesome.
I hope I am not the only one to do this  :blush-fox:

Yep!  Most people who know anything about networking do.  In fact, I started a thread here to name mine, last time I built a new one :-)

The following names are in use on my network, decided to use Russian animal words:

Laika (my desktop PC, and the designated media file server.  Named for the Russian dog who flew into space.)
Khasky (my laptop, name means husky puppy)
Koshka (sister's desktop, name means cat)
Sebaka (mom's desktop, name means dog)
UFO (mom's laptop, named after an 80s band, never renamed when I changed the network's naming scheme)
Volka (name on hold, goes with my giant competition-PC case, which will eventually be rebuilt into a media center.  Name means wolf)

I use Gods/Goddesses/mythical beings etc to name mine

Daedalus (the fourth) is my Desktop
Athena was my old server, cat spilled water into her, motherboard and processor fried
Calypso is my current server
Helios is my laptop, which should be back from repairs again on Wednesday
And Hermes is my Android phone, and HTC vivid which i'm very proud of. Its got a bigger screen, better colors, 20% faster processor, double the ram and hard drive space then the iphone 4s, and half the price ^_^

Nope, and I didn't know the phenomena was common. Since I currently know, it couldn't hurt to name my computer now. I'll name my computer Huxley after the great English Zoologist of the same name. It seems quite appropriate since I extensively use the internet to study many subjects related to animals.

Nah, I'm too boring a person to do that. My devices are just named atte-laptop, atte-desktop, atte-phone and so on in their network configurations.

Well except for my server, which is named Lynx! :3

I call my MBP MacReady, in honor of the character from "The Thing." I haven't gotten around to giving my phone a name, but I'll give it some thought.

I do not have any name for my computer, but this thread has inspired me to look for one. Also, my laptop needs one too. Maybe his'll be Sh*t Brick, because he runs like one...

Waaat, people name their computers? That's outlandish!

Actually seems normal to me however I do not have a name for mine.

As much as I use this laptop and am on it, I don't view it as a living thing so it does not need a name. Maybe that's why it doesn't run as fast, it's always been getting the cold shoulder from me.

The way I see it, naming it gives you the ability to call it by a name so that people are aware of what you are talking about (if they know you that well). I mean, my family has a TON of computers, so if I talk about one specifically then a name becomes useful.

My first computer was named "Ghettobox", because it ran terribly, and I didn't have case panels installed when I took it to my first LAN party :-P

Actually, it's a matter of technical necessity, all computers on a network (which is every computer nowadays) must have a unique name on that network.  So, if you don't manually assign one by naming it, it'll generate a random one during installation, usually a string of random characters following the first username you set up during installation.

It's also kind of a perk of being a network administrator, naming the company's servers.  My dad used spices for his employer's servers; Rosemary, Jasmine, Thyme, etc.  I've never had that privilege myself, but I did get to name the server FT used to be hosted on, Allegheny, named for a nearby mountain range :-)

Or, maybe I'll name mine 'Jet' instead because it sounds like one when it tries to cool down. And it needs to cool down a lot...

Plus, that's a bit more socially acceptable name than the other one.^^
