Anybody know of some good board games?
« on: April 10, 2012, 10:44:47 pm »
(I don't know if there is allready a similar thread of this topic) Both myself, and my Brother love playing boardgames, and while we allready own quite a few, I would love to know of some other good ones out there. My personal favorite sort of board games are strategy based games like Civilization, and role playing games like D&D, but I'm willing to give anything a try.

Here are a few we own that you guys might like to try. :fox-:):

Civilization. (Strategy)
The resistance. (a strategy game of sorts)
Carcassonne.(A strategy game and personal favorite of mine)
The Horus Heresy board game.(warhammer 40k themed strategy)
Cluedo.(a mystery murder solving puzzle game)

Some of my favorites (with a few repeats included) are:
- Risk
- D&D
- Monopoly
- Scrabble
- Clue
- Warhammer 40k (a VERY expensive board game!)
- Axis and Allies (WWII Risk)
- Hordes (a bit like Warhammer 40k but more midevil/steampunk)
- Warmachine (steampunk Warhammer 40k)
If we treat people as they are, we make them worse. If we treat them as they ought to be, we help them become what they are capable of becoming.

We're not retreating, we're advancing in a different direction!

-Pandemic (very fun cooperative boardgaming)
-Ticket to Ride (railroad tycoon shenanigans)
-Memoir 44 (strategy wwII, easy pickup and play)
-Apples to Apples (more of a card game, but its also some of the most fun I've ever had, booze helps.)
-Blockus (geometric strategy, really addicting)

And if you like dice centric there is Buck Dice, which you can look up the rules for free.

Cheers for all the folks throwing up tabletop wargames like 40k, they are very fun, and to those who say its expensive(which is true), remember you don't have to play a large scale game or buy models firsthand.
Love the woods.

Seeing as there is alot of talk about Warhammer style games, I was wondering if anyone plays Mordenheim? if you don't know what it is, it's basicly warhammer fantasy, but rather than using a huge army, you take a small warband instead. I don't think they make rule books for it anymore, but you can find them online.

I'm not a huge fan of board games and I don't really own that many of them anymore; the amount of pieces belonging to my board games which I have lost has rendered most of them unplayable. But there are a couple of examples which stand out in particular and are still playable. I happen to love chess. I've been casually playing the game ever since I was seven years old. I enjoy the overall strategy and skill of the game. I also really like Ouija boards. No, I don't really believe in elements of the occult or supernatural, but that still doesn't stop me from finding them entertaining. I often compare my interest in Ouija boards to how people enjoy stage-magicians, you know it is fake and the magician is not necessarily a charlatan because most will admit that what they do is not "real" magic, but what people do find interesting is the illusion itself. Without any preconceived beliefs in the occult, Ouija boards can offer some pretty good fun.

I have heard of this game, but I've never played it. Sounds like it could be fun though and maybe cheaper than 40k (because of smaller army sizes).

I play almost all my games on the computer but I have tried playing 40k and it was way too expensive to even to get started. But as expensive as it was, the game was very enjoyable and even met some people that I still talk to today. I have started playing Magic: The Gathering and I will probably keep playing that :D (last sentence was a bit off topic).

I personally preffer it to the bigger games (fantasy, and 40K) As altohugh big long matches are fun, they can be quite time consuming, Mordenheim matches normally last 30 minutes at the most. and yes, it is much cheaper.

Risk, Monopoly, Clue, Sorry, and Scrabble are some well known board games..
I would definitely recommend Ticket to Ride. It takes a long time to play, but it's very fun.

You could also try making your own game. It's not that hard.

The Dragonology board game :D it is a cool layout, very artisitc and an action adventure type thing that is pretty easy. It focuses around befriending 5 dragons or so, i think, and trying to beat the other players as quick as possible as you travel around the world in search of the Dragon's Eye, a rare gem that holds dragon master's power :3

I preffer Hordes and Warmachine for the same reason: 30-45min matches instead of a few hours (and alot cheaper). Though, if you realy want to go for a large, long game, try 40k apocalypse  :D 6+ hours of fun!

apocalypse really isn't my thing, I can see the appeal there for most players, but at the same time, it really seems to me like a way for Games Workshop to sponge even more money out of people than they do allready.

- Hordes (a bit like Warhammer 40k but more midevil/steampunk)
- Warmachine (steampunk Warhammer 40k)

Warmachine/hordes are nothing lke 40k. They're also the same game, two sides of the same coin, so to speak. And they're tabletop wargames,  not board games.

The discworld b.g's are simple, but really fun, with. A bunch of ways to win which usually makes them end suddenly. Battlestar galactica is a good one if you hate the people you surround yourself with, and the gears of war game is amazing.

Im glad im not the only one who likes Battlestar Galactica the board game it does a good job of creating the feel of the tv show and can be really fun if you have 6 people playing it here is the website to it http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=18&enmi=Battlestar%20Galactica I also recommend The lord of the rings risk
