Top Trance!
« on: October 04, 2013, 04:04:30 pm »
When you have a moment, choose some on this - random but studendous - list to play back during a dull moment. It's fun, and you might actually get to pick a winner. Everything listed originated from my private forum's archives - far too good to waste. Special thanks to mum Rachel for helping me list some of the greatest trance tracks ever!

Notes before we proceed:

One of the very best trance producers was Oliver Lieb. He is one of 6 different sources commonly credited with inventing trance (the others being Kraftwerk, The KLF, Psychic TV, Dance 2 Trance and Age of Love). Lieb is consistently credited with inventing progressive trance, then popularizing it and producing one of the overall best tracks in the style (LSG - Netherworld). He debatably created "anthem trance" in a certain form (listen to his old Paragliders tracks, especially the club anthem "Paraglide"). Under his own name, Lieb is often credited with creating ambient trance, and later on, tech-trance (with his later LSG albums).

Oliver Lieb appears in a great number of places on this list under his many aliases, and has produced an uncountable number of club anthems. The total number of tracks he has created is well over 500, and most of them are in the higher quality of trance music. Any of these tracks ring a bell?:

LSG - Netherworld
Paragliders - Paraglide
Paragliders - Oasis
LSG - Into Deep
LSG - I'm not existing
Spicelab - Amorph
Olvier Lieb - Subraumstimulation
The Ambush - Ambush 2
The Ambush - Casablanca
Utah Saints - Lost Vagueness (Oliver Lieb mix)
Force Legato - System
Spicelab - Quicksand

All Oliver Lieb. All absolutely wonderful classics. And only naming a few!

As for Matt Darey's Not Over Yet mix, it's OK. Not bad, not pretty amazing.

Okay then? Ya ready to roll? Then you been warned, buddy!

Pulp Victim - The World [1998]
Rank 1 - Airwave
Delerium ft Sarah Machlachlan - Silence (Tiesto mix) [2000]
Benny Benassi - Satisfaction [2003]
{arguable - electro-house}
Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone [1998]
Planet Perfecto - Bullet in the Gun
Ferry Corsten - Rock Your Body Rock [2003]
DJ Shog - Another World {Quite possibly one of the worst producer names of all time. Besides the fact that putting "DJ" before your alias is ****ing idiotic, "Shog" is probably the stupidest slang term ever invented. Totally inappropriate too, considering it's an ebonic word: this is about the equivalent of a trance artist named DJ Murda-Thug. Only "shog" has no street cred as a colloquialism (ie: only wiggers say it), so it's like calling yourself DJ Fuzzy Street Soldja, playing fluffy trance, and thinking you're pretty hardcore. The track is also terrible.)
Delerium - After All (Svenson & Gielson mix) [2004]
Aquagen - Summer is Calling
Oakenfold - Southern Sun (Tiesto mix)
4 Strings - Sunrise
Tenth Planet - Ghosts
System F - Out of the Blue
Kamaya Painters - Endless Wave [2000] [epic trance]
Oceanlab - Satellite
White Room - Someday
Adam White - Ballerina
System F - Indian Summer
Johan Kivi - Clouds
Orson W - Ilse
Minimalistix - Struggle for Pleasure

The microhouse list is a good place to start for those tracks, as for the trance DJ aliases, discogs.com would do a far better job than me. If you're lost there, use the top 100 DJs list (most are trance) and search them on discogs: it will show all of their aliases. Famous trance DJ examples:

Sasha
Tiesto
Armin Van Buuren
Ferry Corsten
Johan Gielen
ATB
BT
John Digweed
Paul Oakenfold
Christopher Lawrence
Marco V
Judge Jules
Above & Beyond
Gabriel & Dresden
Blank & Jones

But they really aren't the BEST DJs around (except maybe the ever innovative Sasha, and musical genius Holden, who now does techno, minimal, and his self-invented subgenre "neo-trance" [or microtrance]). You'll have to look in other genres for those, as trance makes it unbelievably easy for DJs to coast along like a human jukebox and still fill the dancefloor (this is why trance DJs mostly fill the so-called "top 100 list").

Look... i know it breaks down but the melodic part to me is a masterpiece... i haven't heard this type of trance before... i really went into trance when i first heard it on Armin van Buuren's "A State of Trance 2006"...
I'll give a little info on where to find the other tracks:

Modulation - Spirits (Cosmicman Remix) on "Paul van Dyk - Live at Energy 2003"
Electrovoya - Whispers on "Ronski Speed - Positive Ways 3" (2005)

Aria - Dido on "Armin van Buuren - Boundaries of Imagination" (1999)
Lost Witness - 7 colors on "Trance Nation mixed by Ferry Corsten"
Formic Acid - Trance dreams ... really OLD track, i think it's from back in 1996
Digital Pressure - Aftershock (Original Mix) on "DJ Carl Mont - Classic Set 2001"
(Alphazone Remix) on "Paul van Dyk - Live at Energy 2003" opening track
Ultravibe - Choose freedom on "Armin van Buuren - In motion" but i'm not sure about this
Sonicvibe - Lunation is pretty recent and you shouldn't have problems finding it
