The Cooler (2003)
2/4

Drama about a man who works as a “cooler” in a low-brow casino, a man used to bring bad luck to winning players. The film stars William H. Macy, with Alex Baldwin and Maria Bello in supporting role. Despite being the least known, Bello is by far giving the best performance in this film. Macy and Baldwin were fine for their roles, but Bello just drowned them out. There was some pretty creative use of editing, especially during the casino scenes and the climax. Overall, though, the film was kind of a drag. Martin Scorsese’s Casino was a much more intriguing film about the casino life. The story wasn’t very interesting and there weren’t any stakes for most of the film. There was a huge ex machina at the end of the climax as well.

Went to see this with my mom a week ago and I adored it. If it weren’t in a select theater an hour away from me I’d go to see it in theaters again.

A Quiet Place (2018)
3.5/4

Horror/thriller about a family trying to survive an apocalyptic world inhabited by creatures who hunt using sound. This is one of the best horror films in recent memory. John Krazinski proves himself to be a masterful director. Every noise and sound is a cause for suspense, which only increases throughout the story. If you love suspense, then you’ll absolutely love this film. Particularly a scene where the mother must give birth. There wasn’t a suspenseful scene that didn’t work. The film is also an excellent example of how to use exposition. Almost everything you need to know is made visually, which is what film is great at. All four actors were great, there weren’t any standouts but they were all good. Despite little spoken dialogue, all the characters are well handled. You really feel and care for them, especially in the suspenseful scenes. The sound design and score were both fantastic as well. Only things were that there were a couple of decisions that didn’t make a lot of sense and the ending sort of had a cliche action movie ending.

Isle Of Dogs: 9/10

This was a stunning movie and was definitely up-to-par with Fantastic Mr. Fox. I went in with very high expectations since Fantastic Mr. Fox is probably my all time favorite movie, and came out completely happy. The visuals were absolutely amazing, especially when you consider the small group of animators that went into this film. Each character looked unique (unless they were intentionally made to look the same) had their own movement patterns and physical quirks/features, and moved smoothly. The dog characters were beautifully made, and they were extremely expressive. You knew exactly what each character was feeling through all the scenes, while not seeming overly human. The human characters were also very nice, and while they were somewhat waxy looking (what I assume to be a stylistic choice) they were not aesthetically displeasing and did not fall into the uncanny valley, which they could have very easily done.

Story wise, I thought the plot was compelling, and I fell in love with each of the characters within minutes of them being on screen. This was quite darker than most other animated movies, but not overly so. I don't feel any of it was unnecessary. The action was usually not very intense, although there were a couple of moments with a bit of blood and one surgery scene, as well as a group of dogs that bear scars and disfiguration from experimental research. None of the experiments are shown on-screen and the dogs are not overly grotesque. You never see anyone in large amounts of pain, so the movie would probably be okay for older children, provided they were with parents. The story was equally exciting and touching, and I was on the edge of my seat for the majority of it.
There have been some complaints of cultural appropriation, and while I can see where that may come from, nothing seemed overly out-of-line. Of course, I am not Japanese so I may not be aware of some things that might be offensive. There was a slight lack of strong female characters. I liked both Tracy and Nutmeg, even if Nutmeg was a bit of a trope and Tracy did fall a little into the "white-savior" characteristic that FilmFox mentioned earlier.

Overall, I think this is an excellent movie and while, like any other movie, it has flaws, it is worth checking out and is thoroughly enjoyable! I seriously wanna watch it at least 7 more times. XD

It was a surprise for me! I thought it would be completely terrible considering the first one was a mega fail, but this one was actually very well written and managed to give me the creeps. I recommend it for those who want something spoopy to watch.

The Departed (2006)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Crime thriller about a crime boss who plants a mole in the police while the police place a mole in the crime boss’s crew. The first notable thing about this film is the casting - it probably has one of the largest ensembles I’ve seen put to film. Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, Mark Wahlberg, and Vera Farmiga all had large roles and all have great performances. Jack Nicholson stood out as a menacing crime boss, being a terrifying antagonist without raising his voice or overacting. Like that of Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men (2007), he gives a subtlety fantastic performance that drives the film forward.

The two moles, played by Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio, act as the the protagonists, both being written equally likable to care for both of them. This conflict however helps increase the tension throughout the film, as it’s clear only one of them can succeed in the end. DiCaprio is great as always and Damon gives one of his best performances. Fantastic acting coupled with Martin Scorsese’s direction creates a thrill ride that despite the long runtime keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time.

Young Frankenstein:
-Comedy that rival Monty Python at times
-Consistent jokes that don't usually get old
-Good at poking fun at older movies
-(Spoiler? Not really.) The ending was slightly abrupt and they could've made better use of specific characters.

8-9/10: Pretty good comedy movie that you should watch if you're into comedy movies like Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Bridge to Terabithia - 1/5
Logic didn't seem to exist at all in this movie. It felt like it was made by aliens who watched human interactions for about three hours and decided to make a movie about it. The entire film felt awkward and almost rushed. Plus, the acting and CGI weren't that great.

The Naked Gun (1988)

4/5

It was a great comedy (like Zucker's movies normally are), but the story was frankly a bit lacking (again, stereotypical of Zucker's movies.) Although the comedy outranked the story, it was at the point I couldn't stop laughing, so story lost it's meaning in entirety. It's a great movie. Though, I liked the series it was based on, Police Squad! better, but it was a bit more risqué, so I'll hold my tongue with mentioning it here.

Solo: A Star Wars Story

A solid 4/5

Before we proceed, please be careful, there are
SPOILERS

So, this movie is to give some backstory as to Han Solos beginnings, and how he partially got where he is now. The acting was good, the actor who played Han could be imagined as he was before he got killed. There wasn't an overwhelming amount of CGI, and the story stayed somewhat on course. It felt a little bit rushed in some places, and it eluded to the next movie in a scene, allowing fans to put it in a general time line. The only things I disliked about it was the rushing, and the amount of times the people missed what they were shooting at.

Deadpool 2
7/10

If you liked the first Deadpool, you would enjoy this movie, and if you didn’t like the first Deadpool, you definitely would not like Deadpool 2. I would say this movie is more violent than the first and has even more explicit humor, so be warned. Overall, though, the jokes were spot-on and there was a lot of character development. Unfortunately, there may or may not have been fridging of an important female character (depending on who you talk to) which brings it down a few marks.
