Because most furries have some social anxiety disorder and they don't like getting negative attention brought to them. They know that the fandom has mature and dark parts to it and they do not want anyone to search up the fandom and stumble across those parts. They think of being a furry as some sort of curse.

Furries need to understand that the fandom is not a super hard life choice. It's a hobby. People don't need to know about hobbies.

I'm not afraid to tell my family. I just don't feel the need to. I don't need to spend the time or effort to try to explain what it is to them.

It took a year for me to tell my parents
Just do it. Don't wait for tomorrow. Because you will just keep telling yourself that.

NBC recently did a news segment on Anthrocon, and it isn't half bad. It brushes off yiff as adult novels (where the typical humans are replaced by furries) and it shows the creative side of it.

I'm not afraid of telling my family I'm a furry, I just don't want to have to explain it and explain that it's not all about sex and that there's nothing wrong with being one, I'll probably have to tell then at some point (when I go to a convention or get a fursuit) but as of right now I don't feel like I need to

I've told my mom I like animal characters and that I'm in a fanclub for animal characters, but I don't want to say I'm "furry" because it can have negative connotations and I don't want her to think I'm into anything dirty (because I'm not).
