What is Music?
« on: August 30, 2014, 10:35:23 pm »
I saw a similar thread posted like this a long time ago, and most of it was filled with the "actual definition" of music.

Today I am asking what is your personal definition of music? To me music is more than black notes on a white page. Music is something that is written with passion, and should be played with emotion. The composer writes to express him/herself. Similar to an artist, writer, etc. But to me music offers something more. It opens a gateway to a new world. You feel what the composer has written.  (Forgive me if this next part is cumbersome).

What is music?

It is when the sun rises and sets
It is the cool air that sweeps across the landscape
The feeling you have when you are near someone you love.

The feeling of both happiness and sadness
Passion and uncertainty
Emotions collide in a sea of sound.

Music has life
Like a storm it is full of power
Changing the way people view and think.

Music goes straight to the heart
It bypasses any means of logical thinking
And it courses through your veins.

Measure after measure
Note after note
Telling a story that will let you know what the artist is feeling.

It is like entering a new world
A world full of beauty and excitement
Music is full of magic.

Music should express a feeling or emotion and express that to the listener, it expresses things in a way nothing else in the world can. I personally use music as an escape to get away from my problems or just to relax

Songs are stories
Stories of love
Stories of hate
Stories of stories
Nevertheless, they're stories

Nobody sees these stories the same way
Stories aren't fixed to look the same
Because the people who view them are unique
No matter how you look at them
They're still stories

Similar to the work of authors
They create different worlds
Though the story of a song is short
It feels better because someone is there to sing about it

Music is an artistic expression. It can be anything from a Mozart piece to Merzbow's noise stuff. As long as the music is created to convey emotion or some other abstract form of thinking it is music. I feel it's ignorant to think there's only one superior form of music. It's all great for the most part. Everyone has their taste, but the passion is all that matters.
