Geometry Bonus
« on: September 18, 2014, 01:13:05 am »
So, we had a test in geometry today, and there was a bonus question that I could not solve for the life of me.  I want to know if anyone of you guys can solve it.  Pretty much, the question is to find x, and here is the diagram:

Good luck, and thanks in advance!

Apparently the answer's 40, yet I'm still not sure how to get there... :p

I don't even know why I tried. I am terrible at math. I would ask your teacher or somebody that teaches a math-related subject. I'm only a Freshman in Algebra I though, so maybe some older or more intellagent members can figure it out.

It's all right, thanks for trying to help!
It sucks for me more... Taking geometry in 8th grade. :p

I'm attempting this (even these kinds of questions i'm terrible at, not geometry in general, THESE TYPES OF QUESTIONS) and im just wondering what method you were taught to solve these types of questions. I'm currently applying some logic with the idea of similar triangles, but i'm not sure if that's what they teach you in grade 8 geometry.

I just want to know so i can help you apply whatever you learned to the problem

I am completely and utterly confused.
That doesn't happen a lot.

I'm having trouble making out what the measurements are, but have you tried setting up a proportion using similar triangles? These both share ASA in common I think, you could probably set up a proportion with that. Just remember the orientation of the two triangles are different. Sorry I can't be more help, I just can't quite decider the measurements on the picture.

This is a bonus question.  We never learned this stuff in class...

Yes, gg to me as well.

Thank you fo r pointing that out.  When I tried considering this information, I found out the answer!
The angle all the way to the left is 40 degrees, since 50+90(combo of the two angles in bottom right)+40=180.  The angle that is to the left of x degrees I called y.  40+3x+y=180, and y+3x+x=180(those 3 angles make a straight line).  I set up a systems of equations, and got x=40!  Yay.  Screw geometry!
