Stupid mistakes you have made upgrading/building a PC
« on: February 04, 2016, 08:38:13 pm »
One mistake I remember doing was 'upgrading' my PC from a Core 2 Duo to a Core 2 Quad.
Turns out the motherboard straight up doesn't accept Quad Core CPUs so that was a waste of money  :sad-fox:

So what mistakes have you guys made?  :lol-fox:

I usually just buy a new PC heh

I never built a pc but I probably like to, I usually am more of a software/programming person than a hardware one

Bought a card that was too big for the case
Which led to
Buying a case that was too big for the computer (power supply cables weren't long enough)
Which led to
Buying a new power supply.

Probably should have done that in another order but meh. Next step is replacing the motherboard/processor combo.

Yeah :3 Shame non-pushpins seem to be hard to find.

That sucks ;w;
I hate it when a simple £100+ upgrade shoot up to £500-600 because something isn't compatible  :sad-fox:.

Bought a graphics card cheap, didn't support drivers for my PC. Couldn't take the graphics card back. I felt like I kinda got scammed!  :shake:

I haven't had any problems yet, but I did get a GT610 for Christmas. It was a crying shame, but a HUGE upgrade from the IGP.

Static-shocked all 4 RAM modules, and now none of them work! (thanks to my fluffy cat rubbing against me while I was working) Oh well, that PC kinda stank anyway, as it was a MAC. Apple computers stink.

That's the issue with them.
I'm guessing it was probably an old graphics card anyways.

Same your RAM died  :sad-fox:
:lol-fox: And yeah that's true about Macs. Overpriced, limited. But Mac OS X is decent but then it's easy to install that on a bog-standard PC

Not having my video card's power cable plugged into my power supply properly.

Screen would stay blank when switched on, I thought it was my RAM so I reseated it and got it to boot into Windows installer. Installed Windows, PC kept crashing every couple of minutes. I kept thinking it was my RAM, and RMA'd it when the problem was just a loose cable all along. x3
Ah well, Amazon didn't complain, shipping the package back cost me an extra tenner though.

I also nearly put a screw in the wrong side when I was mounting my backplate for my PC's liquid cooling system.

I have a 4790k with the h22x2 and a gtx 980. Sounds badass right? Well, except I'm not good at organization and it seemed like every cable was either to long or short. And on top of that I filtered all my cables through side grommets and none from underneath. Now the back panel on the H400 R&B is bending outwards from the cables...

I tend to be rather meticulous with stuff like this and try to make no mistakes.

However, when installing my new closed loop liquid CPU cooler it turns out there not enough room inside the case for both the radiator and the fans. I tried mounting the rad on the top outside of the case and fans inside but the coolant tubes wouldn't reach so I had to swap the rad and fans around. That would of worked except the housing on the top of my case wont fit 140mm fans. If I wanted them I would need to remove the entire to of the case which would make it look terrible and also wouldn't work as all the USB ports and power buttons are connected to it. I had to resort to using 120mm stock case fans that did fit. I have since improved the situation since by replacing them with 120mm noctua NFF12's but im still annoyed I cant fit maximum efficiency 140mm fans!  :(
