How to survive a computer virus without antivirus?
« on: March 02, 2016, 10:39:16 am »
I pressed on one of those ads you see on the internet by accident, it led me to a page that was obviously shady so I exited it out, but there was a pop up saying there's a virus and to call a certain number

I don't have antivirus

I'm doomed

But is there any way, as in online antivirus sites, to get rid of it? Or was it just a false claim of the site?

I might use one of those online antivirus scanners, even though they usually give fake results. Just. To. Be. Safe.

Just an FYI I'm 90% positive that those virus pop ups are fake because I get those when I accidentally hit the ad like I said before and I just reward my iPad and it works just like normal

Avira for the win!

It is free, it provides you with a firewall, it has file specific scanning, it has a database of viruses that is updated every day, and you can put it on your phone and connect the two.

What type of file is it?

.exe and most others don't work

Actually, I'm not quite sure. I think it is a whole program within itself, with an online cloud.

Malwarebytes isn't a Chrome extension but an actual stand alone application which too must knowledge must be installed on your computer before you can use it, I don't believe it has any system for running from the browser. You can find it here:
https://www.malwarebytes.org/

If you're looking for something run through the browser I know BitDefender has something of an online Quick scan but if you really want to be thorough I highly recommend using Malwarebytes to scan your computer. It's important to understand the free version of Malwarebytes is not Anti-Virus, it's prime purpose is scanning your computer and ridding it of Malware, the difference is in that good Anti-virus will, for the most part, prevent you from getting a virus or Malware in the first place, Malwarebytes is for removing it Malware and viruses after you have them and scanning if you feel you do have Malware. While I highly recommend installing Malwarebytes it alone is not enough to keep your computer secure.

Well if you can restart your computer from a backup you can wipe out all data that your computer gained since the point of the back up. (Which my father always does when I used to get viruses.) Some viruses are really nasty though, they can litteraly stop you from getting to your backup. But I doubt your virus is like that, so if all else fails, restart from a backup.
