I do cosplay stuff
« on: April 16, 2016, 03:27:03 am »
SO yeah I don't just draw stuff, I also make cosplay (Initially I just started out modifying pre-bought cosplay to make them more canon friendly, then I started making stuff.)
I would have put this in my main arts thread but it made more sense to me at least to start a new post for this new topic, topic to be revealed...NOW

Is a gauntlet. Is made of foam. Is gold. Took about 7 prototypes to get to this point. Worth it.
If the mod in charge of this subforum thinks this doesn't warrants a new thread, I'm cool with it being merged.Go for it.

Looks good  :lol-fox: I worked with foam for the first time on my last costume, I made armor and it was hard enough forming that, I can't imagine how frustrating it was to make it go all the way around @-@

You're going to be seeing a lot of updates in this post as working on cosplay is the only thing besides playing Halo with the Grilfiend that helps stave off depression AND thoughts of self harm, hooboy.

EVA foam, Basically those interlocking foam alphabet mats the kids have or the ones you sometimes see at outdoor parties and in mechanic shops that have a smooth side and a textured, rugged side for grip, and craft foam, thin versions of the EVA foam, you can usually get multi packs from craft stores or dollar stores for cheap. I'll be working on it tomorrow to fix up some stuff and do some detailing so I'll take a picture of my materials since I can't remember everything I used off the top of my head.

So? All cosplay is legit. Gonna cosplay as sans? Go for it, put in your best. The quality of a cosplay is in the play, you have fun with that cosplay and it is genuinely a better cosplay than someone in a high quality cosplay they are only wearing to be snobby in. You have no reason at all to feel ashamed as long as you enjoy cosplaying.

Boom, small image dump thing

Okay, I use the Armorall to seal the foam, and give it the black look and the gold pain is painfully obvious with what it was used for huehue

I use the heat gun to flex parts, moulding it to yourself when you need to get the foam so hot it's melting a little inside, no joke, that's what happens, is risky. Then I use hot glue to attach piece to each other, you can use contact cement if you wanna, that works too.

The big grey square is the EVAfoam and is used to make the big parts of armour such as the breast plate. The small colourful rectangles are Craft foam. Same stuff, just thinner than the outdoor mats.Good for details or surreptitious reinforcement of the armour.

It's also easier to work with than PVC and Fibreglass

Plus making pauldrons is easier in flexible foamy sturf

Wow! How'd you get them go shine like that, did you use a polish? Also wouldn't that be hot?

It may be semi-gloss paint or the matte is positioned in the light awkwardly

[Edit] I also believe that gold is a metallic based paint too

Got it in one. The gold is a metallic house paint for stuff like towel racks, plus there are very few sources of natural light in the house, especially by the time I'm done making and plastidipping the armour pieces so I have to use the overhead laundry lights, which make the Plastidip and Gold paint seem shinier than in normal light.
As for hot. Yes, it could be, the one thing I learned wearing an Eren Jaeger Cosplay during a summer trip into the city is that cosplay is generally universally warm to wear, and black foam would kill life as we know it. Hence why I drink heaps of water and carry a japanese folding fan while cosplaying, this isn't as loose fitting as my space marine torso, so I can't install computer fans inside the cosplay

If you have a space large enough, you could install a small cooling fan from an old computer in it! :D

I actually had a wiring plan set up to have a battery set up in the back pack of my space marine outfit connected to various fans, both to add an inhuman, mechanical whirring, and to keep myself from dying of heat exhaustion.

Make things interesting and throw in some dry ice. That'll be a nice touch
