Pronoun Field: Explanation & Policies
« on: April 21, 2016, 11:23:01 am »
PLEASE NOTE: Although we've had the pronoun field for a while, the gender field will be fully disabled in the next couple of days. Please read our policies and fill out your pronoun field appropriately, thank you!

What is a pronoun?/What do I put here?
A pronoun is a word used to refer to a person or thing without using their name. Of the pronouns traditionally used in English, "he" and "she" frequently define the person's gender as either "male" or "female". Some feel these two categories are not enough, or for some other reason would prefer to be referred to using certain pronouns, so we have allowed freeform input for this field. Common values for this field might be "He/Him/His", "She/Her/Hers" or "They/Them/Theirs".

Can I put a nickname in this field?
No. A PM will be sent and your pronoun field reverted back.
Please keep nicknames & those types of pronouns to your title/signature/display name.

Can I put [joke]/[joke]self in this field?
Absolutely not. This is seen as a mockery of the trans community and action will be taken.

Can I just put "male" or "female"?
This is a blooming issue regarding normalizing being cisgender, so it is advisable that you don't, but we won't stop you.

Can I put "I don't care"? I really don't care what someone addresses me as.
It's all in the wording. "No preference" or "She/he/they" is better than "Call me whatever I don't give a crap"
We won't automatically stop you, but we reserve the right to take action if we feel it's offensive.

What if I use nounself pronouns?
We will treat these like any other pronoun and others are expected to do so.

What if I don't know someone's pronouns?
We are phasing out the gender field, so the pronoun field is required.
If for some reason pronouns aren't known, never assume--they/them/themself is usually a good, gender-neutral choice.

What if I have been misgendered?
Please report the post and/or contact a staff member, and we will work to fix it ASAP (including editing the post(s), taking appropriate action on the offender, etc.)

We also understand gender is fluid and pronouns can change, so we welcome changing old pronouns in posts (to an extent). Please contact a staff member with the old post(s) (either by yourself or others), what you would like the pronouns changed to, and we will correct it.

What if I have misgendered someone?
Reports of misgendering will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Generally, if its a first-time offense an there was no malicious intent, the post will be edited and a PM sent.
Repeated misgendering and/or misgendering with malicious intent will be met with a Warning; depending on the situation, a ban may also be issued.
Both direct (towards a member) and indirect (i.e. referring to a MtF as "he" in the debate board) misgendering are unacceptable.

Our visable pronoun field gives little room for ignorance. Constant misgendering is a bannable offense.
For further questions/concerns, post here or contact a staff member.

Is it ok if I use "it" as my pronoun because I don't feel connected to any gender?

This is a change I definitely welcome, especially with cracking down on people misusing the pronouns field.

The gender field was disabled to alliviate confusion and because it wasn't inclusive. Having to look at two different fields for gender sometimes led to confusion as to how to refer to a person (particularly when the gender and pronoun fields had different information), having one pronoun field makes things much clearer. Plus the gender field only accomidated the gender binary, there was no option to add additional genders which often lead to non binary people feeling left out. Now everyone is using the same field which will make things clearer and everyone feel more included

And yes your pronoun field should be find
