Worst malware/viruses/worms etc. you've encountered?
« on: May 13, 2016, 12:01:11 am »
I'm not sure if a topic like this already exists or not, but I'm curious to hear from you guys. What has been the worst malware issue that you've ever encountered? I guess this could also extend to things like hackers, really anything that has entered your computer with harmful intent.

For me, I've never had any issues too serious, mostly because I have a good anti-virus software and don't click on malicious stuff a lot, but I have had a few weird files pop up on my computer before that I needed to get rid of. There's also been a few Trojans, including one I had to remove today because of my sister.

I'm sure my dad has gotten himself into his share of nasty virus-related shit during his lifetime, but those aren't my stories to tell.  :fox-;):

gah i've encountered so many especially on my old win XP (though i remember them on 98 a bit too)

One time I had like 15 viruses after as scan i think it was due to an illegal movie site....
But the worst one was when all my files were wiped... well actually the same computer also stopped working generally to it woldnt start apart from safe mode and then would come up with a fake virus scanning thing saying pay to fix. Maybe they had the files.. I wanted them back of course... I had like photos and stuff i really wanted to keep yet all but the ones from my 98 computer are destroyed. this is why ya should back up you files and be careful where you visit..

I've actually gotten a few of them, two of my computers had it so bad that they wouldn't even start anymore, I ended up having to throw them away along with everything they had on them.

I used to have really bad adware in my laptop, made it almost unusable because wherever I clicked had an ad pop up but I've luckily gotten rid of it

This usually is never a problem for me as I have good security and I know my way around a computer and the internet. However, when I was using TOR on my old laptop I was some what naive. I have my proper PC now that I always use so I don't really care for my laptop anymore so I used tor carelessly only using some bad antivirus software that might have even been off.

I knew something was wrong when I couldn't access administrative functions. Then when trying to do a virus sweep the program wouldn't let me. After restarting I found that my antivirus software was uninstalled and it was unable to reinstall it. It was as if something just removed it from my laptop. At this point I knew I had downloaded something bad. Doing system restore and installing malware bytes removed the virus.

This was a very close call, if I didn't realize when I did I might not have been able to remove it.

I might've run into some more serious issues when I was younger and more naive, but I don't remember anything about it. I guess if I ever did run into anything, the person who would always take care of it would be my dad. Also, now that I think about it, I probably didn't run into a lot of virus-related stuff in my life because my dad was very strict about telling me not to click on malicious things from the internet.

Basically, I have my dad to thank for such good education on protecting myself from malware.

(Sighs) I had so much malware back in the day... Thanks mom. (We shared a computer.)

Well I don't remember getting his too hard with malware. But my papa on the other hand... Oh boy! He got taken over XD
Basically he downloaded one thing, and that one thing took over his computer, and forcefully downloaded everything else onto the computer and it kept downloading stuff. Eventually he was able to get out of it.

I'd say the worst malware I've encountered has been a sort of add spamming program that put adds on every website. I got rid of it with malwarebytes, luckily ^^ Other than that I haven't really had problems with malware or adware

My parents managed to somehow get a trojan virus back many years ago which was enough to convince them they actually needed a virus scanning software to secure the computer. I'm sure many viruses still managed to get on that conputer because it barely works today. I also managed to install two or so viruses on my school's computer last year. They weren't anything serious like a trojan virus, but they were very annoying. They were both malware and everytime I went to get on my internet browser, it would open it's own browser. There were two of them and they became very frustrating for me. I notified my school's technical department but they didn't do a single thing to fix it. I tried deleteing it myself using the files and even Windows command prompts. I could delete some of the files out of the computer but nothing that actually got rid of it. Our school has blocked the command prompts on all our computers meaning I couldn't delet any of the malware deep in the hard drive because I couldn't use command prompts to get rid of them. Luvkily, they erased all computers during the Summer.

While I don't get them as I know what to look out for, I work in IT and see people getting malware all the time.

The worst I've seen was a customer who had a cryptolocker virus, for those that don't know, it encrypts every personal file on your computer so they are inaccessible unless you pay money to get them back, this particular guy logged onto his work network with the infected laptop, therefore infecting his entire work network and taking down the whole business, including backups which sadly was doing a backup at the time.

After that though, he tried to pay the random for all the data back, totaling nearly $9000 AU, which of course didn't actually do anything. So now he's left without a business, down $9000 and has no backups.

The FBI Moneypak Ransomware Virus.
It's pretty much like the one that Cam explained except it's more localised. My father once got it on his laptop, it essentially locks you out of your device and asks you to pay money in order to get it back.
We got rid of it however.

But that's the worst I've seen personally.

This was back in '08 when i was a retarded little child and kept falling for those "You are our one millionth visitor, heres $1000." or "Flashplayer is out of date, Renew now?" Scams. After that, my desktop was full of unwanted applications and tool such as a search bar for ask.com which you couldn't uninstall and blocked the start button. I eventually discovered i got The Storm worm which actually has your computer become part of a botnet.

Probably the hacked version of conduit, I got it from heavily modding my minecraft and using multiple sites. It slowed my old pc to a halt almost and just recently have I been able to clean it out of my old nostalgic windows XP PC

My dad installed some really bad stuff onto the computer I used when I was 10. It wasn't too bad at first, but it progressively got worse to the point where programs wouldn't open. I wanna say it was called a blaster worm because a notification bubble would pop up saying something or other about a "blaster.worm", but I think that it was a combination of a lot of malware that messed with the computer to the point that we threw it out.
The worst thing I've installed in recent years was some adware and fake virus scanners (Never on purpose), but it wasn't anything a quick Google search couldn't fix.

Oh man
Like 10ish years ago now probably, Deviantart had this virus (idk exact terms SORRY) going around. I don't remember much except it automatically redirected your browser to some porn site. Those were my baby internet days, so I knew nothing of virus programs/adblockers/whatever and all we had was whatever came on our computer. So of course, next time my parents used the internet they were directed to a porn site and I was in a lot of trouble e_e

That sounds bad. Actually, I've recently had issues with dA redirecting me to a certain virus site unexpectedly. Sometimes, when I'm just browsing deviations and I click on one, after a while it will randomly take me to a fake Adobe Flash site that immediately downloads a trojan to your computer. I have no idea why it happens. It isn't common, but it's happened at least twice to me. It's not something wrong with my computer, and I'm pretty sure it's not deviantart's fault because it's the official site and I never click on ads. I don't know, maybe it's fixed now, but I try not to stay on deviations too long because I don't wanna have to go through the whole process of removing a trojan from my computer again and again. e_e

Sorry, your story just kinda reminded me of it.
