Alternatives to Skype
« on: December 10, 2016, 08:45:52 pm »
My friend and I have been having a lot of trouble with Skype, and we are looking for something else to use. We are looking for an application that has screen sharing, video with an exposure setting, and isn't too complicated to use. Things that we have already tried using are Jitsi, Google Hangouts, and facebook (which did not have share screens or any other features at all).

join me has screen sharing, chat, and a call feature. Though, the screen sharing thing isn't the best quality.

I use discord, but I recommend Google Hangouts, as it has a pretty good screenshare and you don't need to create a new account for it.

Discord is amazing for media, you can click youtube links in chat and watch them embedded, gifs play on mouseover, pictures aren't cropped out like SERIOUSLY SKYPE?

But it doesn't have mood messages which are fun, and not many people use it. But other than that its pretty much perfect.

Plus, it also doesn't force you to use awful emojis. Like come on, skype replaces :3 with a cat. As a furry I feel offended XD

Rabbit, it requires no resgistering to host video chats-But if you do, You have the function to lock your chat and invite only your friends if you want, and even kick them out too. It's available on mobile now, but it's less laggy on the computer. I was a beta tester, and it's a great alternative to Skype-It's perfect for hosting movies while chatting too!

I use Kik which is available for free on most devices. It allows you to connect with friends and you even make new friends there. It also allows you to synchronize your contacts. Although it's still primarily a text messaging app, it has recently been updated to include video chats. I'm unsure of how good they are though. I also have Telegram, although I haven't used it in quite awhile. Telegram is rather interesting in that it can be encrypted and that it promotes full privacy. It also has some rather unique features such as the ability to have group conversations with up to 500 people. Telegram also uses your phone number or e-mail address, but you can choose to create an online username as well. One draw back with Telegram is that it doesn't function as its own social network like Kik therefore, you can only talk to people who you meet away from the app, Telegram also doesn't have a video chat feature, meaning it may not be what you're looking for. Otherwise, I'd say that Google Hangouts is your best option until you can have your problems with Skype corrected.

Well a bit late to the post but I have had friends switch from Skype to Oovoo which has video sharing though not so sure about the other features since I never used it myself.
