recording from a midi sound module?
« on: February 22, 2017, 02:56:13 pm »
hi so uh
i need a bit of help on this and idk where else to put it so i guess here??
but yeah
recently i bought a midi sound module
it's an edirol sd-90 so i can make touhou-style music (bc im touhou trash l m a o)
and i've made quite a few midi files with it but when i go on audacity and try and record anything its just silence??
like
i am fully aware that midi isn't really audio and its just a bunch of events but i just wanna record it and export it as a wav
the sd-90 is connected via usb port to my laptop and also by an RCA to 3.5mm cable thingy from the input at the back of the module to my microphone jack
i've tried every audio host available on audacity to me (mme, directsound and wasapi) and nothing seems to come out of it
i'm sorry if i seem clueless on this i just
ughuegghuhg
i'm very poor so i really hope i don't have to spend any more money on anything else as of yet ;;

I dont think audacity supports recording or exporting MiDi files
Edit:I found this, this might help? https://imusic.iskysoft.com/edit-music/audacity-midi-wont-play.html

i've known people in the past record midis in audacity with such hardware
also i think that article only tells you how to record midis with microsoft gs wavetable synth, since that's the default midi device that's built in with practically all copies of windows, and it's laggy and sounds awful
what i'm trying to use is an external midi module (more specifically the edirol sd-90)
idk im sorry i just
ughugauug
i know eventually i'll find a way around it
does anyone have any free alternatives to audacity or anything?
or maybe i should invest in a decent daw like cubase or smthn

To my knowledge, Audacity doesn't support MIDI input at all, so you would have to use some additional software for rendering to audio (back to square one).

However, if you're looking for free alternatives, LMMS might be a good option. It seems to be based primarily around MIDI recordings and arrangements!
