Help with applying for colleges
« on: March 15, 2017, 05:24:41 pm »
I'm looking into colleges
How does one go about with picking them?
How do you apply?
How do you know if they are decent colleges?

The easiest way to apply to a college is through the Common App website. Most colleges are on there, but some wantto be special snowflakes and make you apply through their website (which is annoying). As for deciding on a college, ask around. I would first look at in state colleges since they're cheaper, and then out of state. Decide a general field of study you have the most interest in (like science, art, law, etc) and look up which colleges have the best program in that area of study

Idk how the American systems work but I know in Ontario we have special sites we need to use. For Universities I had to get a pin from my school, for collages I just needed to make an account. So you may want to look into in the us or specific states have similar policies

Also keep an eye out for things like equal consideration dates. These are particularly important for popular or competitive programs. If you miss them you're very unlikely to get in and may want to wait a year

As for picking collages look them up online and see what programs you like. Google the collages themselves and you'll probably get some reviews. Ask teachers and other people since they tend to know best. Visiting them is also a good idea ^^

Common app is tremendously helpful, a lot of colleges use that so I'd suggest making one, even if a place youre interested in doesnt accept common app, you still have everything you need there that you can just tailor to your desired college.

And I think the best way to search is to start from what major youre pursuing, and just narrow it down by preference there. Start asking things like; is the distance from home OK with you? Does it support your college plans (majors/backups/ect.) Financial aid is also something you should look into, it seems daunting at first but talk to your parents about it if you can.

And it really helps to also get a 'template' resume done in this time, you will need this later in life so its best to start making one now. You can add onto it throughout college, and it helps tremendously when writing essays for college and scholarship applications.

And dont forget about visitations, almost all colleges offer them and theyre very helpful for decision-making as you get some first hand experience of the college.

It can be kinda crazy I know, but hey, if you need help my skype is always open!

Regardless of whichever online form a college uses for their applications, you're probably going to want to compile a list of all the extracurricular activities you've done throughout high school, approximately when you participated, and a total number of hours. I know this is really annoying (at least it was for me), but it is a necessity on every application I've seen and like Peanut said, will help you if you need to write a resume for something else later on.

And while you should always consider your choice of major (whether or not the college has a strong program for it), keep in mind that a surprisingly high percentage of students end up changing their major anyway. Don't let that be the only defining factor unless you're absolutely sure what you want to do or the college's strengths are in a specific department that you would very doubtfully leave.

These following sites are extremely valuable resources and I would recommend checking any colleges you're considering on both of them (they're interactive and have comparison tools as well):

Also, if you have any questions that are more specific, this is a good place to go:
