Music Software
« on: April 22, 2017, 04:17:18 am »
Hi, I'm thinking of starting to record some musical stuff, but I have no idea where to start.

Musically I know the basics, but tech wise I don't know what to use. If anyone on the forum could help me with their setups and what to use eg. mics, recording software, audio editing, where to get synth/other effects, etc.

Thanks!  :fox-;):

I almost always use Audacity. It's a wholesome program, free, and reliable. You might have to learn its basics to be able to handle it, though.

As stated above, Audacity is probably your best bet for directly recording, since it has the bare essentials and probably the simplest interface you could ask for. Regarding anything else such as arranging tracks, using VSTs (synths and effect plugins), laying out generated notes/percussion, and mixing, you might be better off using something that has more features. There are many DAWs out there that can get the job done, and it's really up to you to decide which one suits you best (this list should be helpful). Unfortunately, as I'm sure you've noticed or assumed by now, most of these cost a bit of money, but there are often demo versions and few free ones that would be good for starting out.

If you're on Mac, Logic Pro is great for recording. I don't know Windows as much so I couldn't help you there. but Audacity is free on all platforms. It really depends on the type of music you're doing though, because Logic is great at recording and mixing but not as good IMO in actually writing music like one would do in Finale. Miss are also a hard one, I've used Shure SM57 mics for marimbas and vibes and they sound good, but aren't condenser, so the gain has to be cranked way up. In terms of recording devices, I'm partial to Presonus or Behringer products, so any of their audio interfaces would be ok.

This feels vague, but I hope it helps nonetheless.

Adobe has a free older version of Audition it's really good and can be useful. google it sometime and you should find it. ^^
As for mics, I'd recommend an Audio Technica AT2020 or a Blue Yeti those are your best bet for how cost effective they are atm
