Popular furry species?
« on: April 23, 2017, 02:37:05 pm »
I saw a thread for uncommon ones so I thought I should make this

What species do you think are the most popular?
What species are getting popular as of right now?
What species do you want to get popular?

Canines are definitely the most popular, and the most popular canines are wolves, foxes, and huskies. I dunno what's getting popular right now, but I'd like to see animals like pigs, cows, reptiles, and rodents become more popular.

-I think pretty much everyone will say wolves. Its a stereotype that most furries are foxes with wolves close behind but I think its the other way around. Canines are the most popular in general.
-Idk that depends on where you look I feel like sharks are getting popular along with hyenas and rats but this could be solely due to the people I'm watching.
-As much as I'd love to see more goo and vampire sonas I'd prefer spiders, insects, and various rodents. Just cause I love them so much, rats and mice have been steady for awhile with occasional fluctuations but I'd love to see others like porcupines, beavers, hamsters, and even capybaras.
I only don't want goos and vampires as people already see vampires as edgy and goo is common when it comes to fetish characters and I prefer not to be associated with fetish goo sonas.
I wouldn't mind seeing more cats either but they are pretty popular already just the damn dogs over powering them :P

canines have always been the most popular. I'm also noticing more of those protogen thingies on this forum and other places. i'd like to see unique species - fishes (thats not a shark), farm animals, bugs, etc.

Canines are definitely really popular, and as far I know they have been for a while- I've been seen quite a few cats as well lately though. Every once in a while though an original species comes along that really blows up for a while. *cough* Protogens *cough*
I'd really like to see reptiles and dinosaurs get popular, I really like seeing what people do with them. Insects would be nice too.

Wolves and foxes have been the top species for as long as I can remember.
I kind of want to see more Pokemon fursuits. As for just 'sonas in general, I want sharks and fish to get a little more recognition. I've seen a few shark characters that looked really cool. I wish there were more bunny girls that weren't strictly racy.

I think dogs are becoming a bit more common than wolves, which is good, but still kinda in the same ballpark. LOTS of canine hybrids everywhere.

Original species are pretty popular as of late-- also African wild dogs, hyenas, and lions?? Something with Africa it seems <X3

I'd like to see more dinos!! They're pretty great B) And dragons have died down a lot actually, or are at least on the backburner? Need more dragons. Wouldn't mind seeing reptiles and mustelids more frequently!!

Us canines still rule the popularity. Foxes are 2nd I believe with Wolves the most popular however Fox fursonas are more visible and likely to be popufur from what I noticed so it seems like foxes are the most popular.

However i think the tables will turn because canines are being looked down on as being unoriginal and people are craving originality so they go after original species and less common species.

According to the wiki fur surveys foxes are the most common species, wolves a close second and I 100% believe that. Canines are extremely common in the fandom. I really wish there was more diversity tbh

Protogens are really popular right not but I this it's more of a craze than a phase, meaning it'll only last a couple weeks. That happened when manokits were first released, everyone was obsessed and making their own and selling Adopts and all you saw in your feeds everywhere was manokits. Then after a few weeks most people forgot about them and not their a rarer species. I feel the same will happen with Protogens and I'm already hearing about them less

As for actual long term trends. Hyenas were popular for at least a year, maybe more, especially on twitter. Everyone was making hyena characters, selling and buying Adopts and there was lots of hyena artwork and fursuits being produced. Now than popularity seems to have disappeared as a new trend, the African wild dog has emerged and I expect it to last a while like the hyenas. People draw/treat them both like  they're canines so I find it pretty burning tbh

I'm really hoping the next species trend will be something that is literally anything that isn't a canine (or drawn like one). I'm thinking maybe deer, bats or red pandas may have a chance since they're already somewhat popular

I think the most popular furry species are wolves and foxes (mainly red foxes), with felines and dragons being close seconds. Though, I have noticed the "dragon craze" has died down a little over the years.

And of course, there are always the species that get popular for a bit and then get forgotten about as soon as the new trends roll in. (For example, sharks, hyenas, etc.)

Well, hyenas (Hyaenidae) aren't canines, but African Wild Dogs are technically part of the Canidae family. But it's definitely annoying when they're drawn the same way as wolves, that's for sure.

I REALLY want to see some capuchin money fursonas and monkeys in general. They're so cute but so ignored ;-;
I've only seen one capuchin monkey, and it was super cute <3

Also, foxes are very common. Very. And wolves. That's okay, though. They're cute too

I found these statistics online. Apparently hybrid species are the most popular with wolves and foxes close behind. Here's the link to the original publication.

Any sort of canine are definitely the most popular. But it would be really cool to have different species too, such as animals without canine muzzles. They'd make cool fursuits too!

I'm alright with canines being pretty popular, they're the most relatable for a lot of people. On the other hand, it would be cool to see more variation in their designs and species. Drawing every single dog or wolf the same is getting a little old. I think it would be cool if people were creative about what specific type of animal they were, but it's also totally up to the creator.
