Ants
« on: November 27, 2016, 01:54:56 pm »
I've made threads about insect interests before, but this one is more specific. I've recently become incredibly interested in ants.
https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLS9BN8VEnxX8sreXEC8m6_SCVl2TSsdDT
I've watched through this whole playlist and I am now waiting for more videos, but I'm also finding lots of other channels with ant videos. I'd like to have a queen of my own and try to start a colony someday. It's extremely interesting and relaxing to watch the ants work and take care of the young. Is there anyone else here who likes ants and wants to keep them, or just likes to watch them in the wild?

i used to spend time watching ants although I admit I killed some because my mum said they were harming the garden. We put hot water on them etc.
They are fun to watch tho
and they like to eat sugar and stuff
but the best day is flying ant day when the winged ants come outside and fly everywhere
also the ants suck the aphids

I don't think ants harm gardens, they're probably very good for them. Also, sweet, sugary things are very good and nutritious for ants because it gives them the energy they need to work nonstop.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2caKueedluk Here's a timelapse video of ants drinking some drops of honey. They go crazy for the stuff and I know it's good food to provide them if you keep ants.
And the flying ants are the queens and princes. They come out to mate, but a queen ant will rip her wings off after she's mated.

Ants are nice
They eat crumbs and are hella strong
I used to have ant farms growing up
I live out in the middle of nowhere so there's lots of ant hills in my yard
They're relaxing to watch
Especially when I'm sad and sit outside

When I was little I used to play with the ants in my backyard and call them my family
About a year or two later, I would take ants and throw them into the spiderwebs under my deck to watch the spiders spin their webs around them

Nowadays I don't play with the ants very much, and I certainly don't throw them into spiderwebs anymore, but I still think it's fun to watch them, or leave a piece of food out overnight and come back to see it covered in ants

They're really cool, especially how they seemingly move in patterns when there's a large amount of them in one place
The way they work in systems and all for a common purpose is fascinating

The Honey ant is best ant

Expect for fire ants.....No one likes them

I didn't really care for ants as a kid (sometimes I would throw my peers possessions or school lunches into fire ant hills), but I used to collect cicada shells in the back yard

I was a weird child

Yuck, fire ants. If I ever get to keep ants, I'll never  keep any of those.
I keep cicada shells whenever I see them, which isn't often tbh
I've got some actual dead adult cicadas in my collection.

Actually I don't think they can't be held in captivity, but I don't know-I once got into ant colonies, but I focused more on acrachnids and snails for some reason. Glad to see someone have a passion in invertebrates-

I'm sure they could be kept just like any other species of ant, but the thought of them escaping is a risk I don't want to take. There's a channel on YouTube called AntsCanada, and I think he keeps fire ants.

Oooooo ants are so cool! I used to watch them and play with a lot as a kid before I develop a phobia of all insects.
I'm more interested in spiders lately but ants are pretty interesting how they work and all. It just reminds of how humans work and any animal that does a lot of similar things to humans just fascinates me ^^
I still enjoy going out in the summer sometimes and watch them run around, especially if there's a whole bunch of them on some food :P

Ants are known to be escape artists, but a few ants leaving the colony would not live in your home unless they have a queen-The queen is optional unless you want a growing colony-You should be fine, but I don't imagine them being a good starter ant..Well unless I'm wrong, their venom is very weak compared to other insects...But yet again, I might be wrongggg

Without a queen, the ants will just die off. So of course when I hopefully start a colony, I'll be getting a queen. Really with the fire ants it's just not wanting to get bitten. There are plenty of harmless ant species to find.

I've read before that most ants don't require a queen (she basically provides the ant larva and helps start breeding grounds), but it's always your choice-I wish the best for your colony

They don't have to have a queen. They can live on without her. What I mean is, without the queen, there won't be any eggs laid to continue generations, so when the workers die off, that'll be the end of the colony. Workers can lay eggs, but they'd all be male, and male ants don't contribute to colonies, only mating with queens.

Ants are amazing creatures but I'm not a fan of them tbh :$ at my old house we had a peach tree and every year they would destroy the peaches before they were rip so I tried a couple times to destroy the nest. I opened up the larve chambers quite a few times, the works woukd run off with the babies which was cool, but I never found the queen so the nest always returned. Then we had an infestation when we moved into our new house. So yah I don't really like them too much
