Working on a parts list for a Custom PC:
« on: July 08, 2017, 01:18:46 am »
Hello! I've decided to build my own computer. My current laptop is very outdated and starting to have a hard time keeping up with my Kerbal space program simulations. Also it's just... too overwhelmed at times for even doing digital art or mixing music decently so I'm thinking having an actual computer for heavy stuff and keeping my laptop for papers and internet (and being portable) works out well.

Link: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/4jhZm8 (note I haven't decided the Graphics card yet and I already have a TV monitor I can use for it.)

Experience:
For starters I have a guy in my neighborhood who would be able to help me put it together, and I've had experience taking apart and cleaning out my current laptop and the HP touch desktop monitor at my house as well. They've been put back together after cleaning by me and have worked out very well.

Needs:
Right now I'm aiming for a cheaper end computer (500-600 build) because I don't have much to deal with right now however, I was building this with the intent of having a good Motherboard and Case, as I can just upgrade it later on or as current parts become outdated. CPU, RAM, SSD, Graphics/Sound, Monitor, ETC can all be upgraded over time and having a flexible build would likely save me money over time instead of having to rebuild the entire thing in one go. At the Very least the MotherBoard, Case, and Peripherals could be used for a LONG while without being upgraded while the rest can be added to and upgraded over time. (at least until mother boards go up to 128 GB of ram and that becomes standard...)

So what I need this computer to do is Run Games (of corse it's a gaming build technically) However, besides games I want it to be able to be used for Animating/Drawing, Mixing music, Recording music, and be able to last for a long while. (at least the next decade please XD)

So basically this thread is just asking for suggestions about the build I have proposed, maybe some changes, and some thoughts and advice people have for it.

Thanks!

P.S. I'm aware of the Potential issue that the Motherboard might need a BIOS update. Also the scariest part of this for me won't be buidling it but rather booting it up since I've never booted up a motherboard and OS before...

Looks pretty good to me, though if you're talking about 3D animations, I'd recommend having either an 8 or 16- thread CPU( Ryzen cause they're cheap right now for good performance), or at least a mid-range graphics card. If you're not doing 3D animations, then you should be all good.

Seems your good, although, with the graphics card, even if your using 3D Graphics, you don't need so.ething expensive. I play 3D games on a box with the cheapest graphics card I could find. Sure, the better the card, theoretically, the cleaner the rendering, the smoother the movement, but if you're on a tight budget, you can get by with nearly any modern card. Also did you look at AMD CPUs? They tend to be cheaper. I made a very similar PC build that I considered, and said I didn't actually need, for under 500 dollars U.S.

Here I modified it a bit so you don't have to update the bios and it's not an ITX motherboard so you'll have more PCI slots for upgradability., though I'd recommend a 500 watt PSU so I put that in for you too, if you want help with a parts list let me know, I've helped friends with a $350 budget with parts so 500-600 would be easy!

Oh cool! thanks!

I'll actually have this as my main list. I couldn't find this motherboard for some reason so thanks for finding it for me XD
Actually... it was probably because I had a ratings standard going on. I was prefering to choose ones with more ratings because that ideally should mean more reliable. But... I guess I can take the word of 6 people on it. I do kinda worry about the board being on the cheaper end of things. Not updating the BIOS sounds like a very nice thing...

On the thing about the CPU, for some reason my build can't take any AMD processors. They're incompatible with both the previous board and the current one so I might actually look for a differnet board but then again... Intel CPU's are pretty reliable and I can upgrade to a 4.2Ghz 4 core CPU still with this board. Might still be worth it, but I'll look around.

I ended up getting a PSU with 450 watts since I really don't need much power for this build. It's barely over 150 watts so I could go cheaper but ironically the 450 watt PSU was very cheap XD cheaper than some of the lower power ones and it's better quality too it seems XDDDDD

Updated list: (still welcoming modifications)

Here you go. This should be a lot better than what you had for a similar price!

here's a new list I came up with: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/NfDHM8
I'm chatting with another guy on the Utah Furs chat who's suggesting I buy a used Dell computer mainly for it's CPU and graphics card but I'm hesitant on it right now.

I'm still very Noob on this and I don't have much money either so IDK really what I'm doing for parts and I've spent a good couple of hours on this one :P

I'm still needing to stick around 500$ and I can see people really don't like this budget because you all are going over XD

It's not a bad part list, but you could go with whitelabel parts for a cheaper price. (But be careful; You may be sacrificing reliability if you're not careful when doing that.)

About the used Dell PC; Sounds like something I would recommend as well. Dell is a reliable brand, and their computers will continue running for years, without replacement parts, if taken care of. If it's got a better CPU, and you can add RAM, an HDD, any necessary cleaning, and other parts not present, cheaper than making a "from scratch" build, go for it. If the used PC, already has nice stats, I wholeheartedly recommend it. My Dell was purchased used.

Yes I'm really considering it.

And I was thinking I might do more of a Scrap build from it. I'd take the CPU, motherboard, optical drive, and RAM.

The Case, Existing Graphics Card, and cooling systems can all be sold.

And instead I'd buy a better case, cooling, Video Card, more RAM, and upgrade it to Windows 10 because I actually like 10 over win 7.

I was against the used build at first because I was like "well I wanna have my own feeling of building it from scratch and all..." but it is cheaper I guess... and such...

Here is the parts list right now:

165$ Base- http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-T1600-Workstation-Xeon-E3-1245-3-3GHz-4GB-250GB-Win-7-Pro-1-Yr-Wty-/401209930911?hash=item5d69f9b49f:g:GZsAAOSwTM5YuE2S

50$ Power- https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438014&cm_re=600w_psu-_-17-438-014-_-Product

55$ RAM- https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820313548&cm_re=8gb_ddr3-_-20-313-548-_-Product

145$ Video Card: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487290&cm_re=gtx_1050_ti-_-14-487-290-_-Product

26$ keyboard: https://www.amazon.com/Hcman-Mechanical-Keyboard-Switches-Computer/dp/B01N57WL39/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1501100819&sr=1-4&keywords=mechanical+keyboard

0$ Wireless card: Harrison is giving me his old one

50$ Monitor:

TOTAL: 491 (current) possibly up to 510

Note: Buying just the CPU that I'll get in that computer would've costed about 300$ alone and has a mark 2x better than the best cpu I could find if I went from scratch. it'll also come with a case, cooling, Motherboard, and Optical drive so it'll be nice.

This particular computer was only used as an office computer so the CPU and motherboard haven't ever been used up to their full potential.

It seems a nice build, and the fact that it was an office computer indicated it was at least okay when it comes to being taken care of. Since it was in an office it's CPU fan (if it is still present) is most likely a silent one. If the motherboard is original it probably takes a CPU that has no pins, only contacts, so makes it a bit less sensitive. That's my experience from getting a used Dell Optiplex which used to be an office PC. If you go this route you will not be disappointed, I assure you.

Everything in that is good, even the gpu, the price is a bit inflated from cryptoming though, so by the time you buy everything the prices may be down a bit on the gpu.

Hello all! I'm happy to announce I've completed this build.

Unfortunately the motherboard in the used Prescision didn't have a PCI-E slot for the WIFI card but I did find a decent USB one that's working perfectly fine right now.

The CPU and the GPU both run benchmarks around the 5,000 range which is pretty sweet.

Ironically I finish this build as school starts so it might not get as much use as it could get except for weekends.

As for my old laptop... IDK what to do with it tbh... I also still like using it since I haven't used windows 7 in a while and its a decent adjust to it. My laptop has also gained a LOT of files recently... So this computer should do fine as a good gamming machine reguardless and my laptop as a good homework machine.

Thanks for the input and opinions here!

Only looked at the list and here's some suggestions:
>Get at least a Bronze or Gold Certified 500W PSU.
>Get a motherboard that allows for expansion to higher end CPUs.
>Windows ISO is for free on microsoft's site. The only thing you can't do is personalize (Wallpapers, colors).
>Please don't buy 1600x900 monitors, it's 2017.

Here's my proposed update: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/b63p6X
Here's a version with a Ryzen R3: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/WW2cwV The Ryzen version costs a bit more but it is quad core and overclockable. Your mileage will be MUCH better.

The list has a graphics card, without it it's still much cheaper than the parts you picked. So yeah, good luck and plan to expand. Also popped an i3 in there;) still cheap.

This is my current build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jRBwXH

Good luck! :lol-fox:

Remember kids, plan to expand your build in the future. It's also better to save up more and buy better than originally planned.
