Favorite language learning apps?
« on: September 02, 2017, 11:13:59 pm »
(I didn't know where else to put this, I hope it's alright that it's in General Chatter ^^)

For those of you who are trying to learn a new language, or have already learned one, what are some of the language learning apps you recommend?

Personally, I love Tinycards. It's not strictly for learning languages, but I'm currently trying to learn Japanese, and I find this app super helpful for memorizing Hiragana.

Also, I've been using a little bit of Duolingo and Memrise, they're both pretty good. However, I haven't actually used either of them a lot yet, since I'm trying to learn all Hiragana [and probably Katakana] first before I begin learning any vocabulary, grammar, etc.

Do PC/Macintosh applications count? And video-based language learning programmes?

It's a bad idea to invest time in these if you aren't going to finish them (and that's not a quick easy project), but they both teach you by dropping you in society. I've only seen a portion of both(more of the Gaelic one), but I do recommend them.

I really enjoy the games on GoVocab, I don't know how many languages are on it but I know there's Japanese, also if you want a desktop translator for Japanese, download Takoboto.

Also I suggest learning the hiragana as you learn some sentence structures, the repition really helps.

I love Duolingo as much as the next guy/gal/furry creature, but Anki and Quizlet have gotta be my favs. They are not structured around langauge learning, which is a downside for newbies, but for someone really trying to bulk up their language skills this adds a lot to what you can do (phrase practice vs. word of the day vs. vocab cramming, etc)!
They're both flashcard programs. Quizlet is flashier and has more of a following, but I prefer Anki's minimalist interface (and it doesn't have a paywall). They both use something called Spaced Repetition, which I'm pretty sure is a legit cognitive science thingy (it seems to work for me)! I know Quizlet helped me get a year ahead in Spanish, which is (in a circuitous way) the sole reason I'm doing Chinese now :3

SpanishDict is my favorite because it gives me more leniency with the sentences, where I can just look up words if I need to.
