Expectation vs reality
« on: October 29, 2017, 11:37:39 am »
This is a thread to post things where your expectation didn't match up to the reality. Try to keep this at least somewhat mature, if someone wants to make a joke version in spam go ahead ^^

When I moved to Toronto I had a big expectation that I'd always be out exploring the concrete jungle. Finding new places, trying new things and generally having lots of freedom. In reality I rarely go anywhere but to and from school, and one tiny section of young street. I'm too nervous to explore much and this too expensive to go places and try new things

My expectations for trick or treating is always so high. But in reality, I end up getting tired halfway through and need a break. x-x
I also feel like my expectations towards cities would be like yours, I'd end up just being in a tiny apartment and never go anywhere since cities are expensive.

Expectation: college courses bind students together through lots of discussion around challenging problems

Reality: college courses bind students together by making them stare silently at challenging problems, in tears

My expectation is always that I'll plan out my time really well and get my studying done early so that I can have 9 hours of sleep. In reality, I'll surf the internet on my phone for 3 hours doing absolutely nothing then cram everything in so it's really poor quality.

I originally expected college to be studying nonstop and feeling super motivated to work. In reality, I'm sitting in the lounge, browsing Twitter while drinking a tiny, overpriced coffee, and debating whether or not I want to skip class.

I expected skipping class to be super dirty and exciting, but in reality I mostly do it in order to... study more. p.p

A number of my expectations generally line up really well with the reality of the world but there are still many times when overthinking leads to false expectations. I never really expected the transition from School to Work to be so smooth and seamless. I expected to have a lot more trouble with it, especially since I was knocked off my feet and put into a disposition where I would have to get a bad job doing something that made no use of the skills I got over the years. Still in reality transition from school to a full-time job was easy for me as school did a pretty good job preparing me for it over the years. I also had A LOT higher expectations for what being an Adult might be like but then besides an unpleasantly long day spent in assorted government offices, I found myself going on to do the exact same things I already did but with a twinge of added responsibility. Moving into a job added more responsibility but did basically nothing else to change my life besides my job taking slightly more time than school.
