Happy Birthday Willy!
« on: April 23, 2005, 12:39:13 pm »
Yes, on this date in 1564, William Shakespear was born.  Well, close enough to this date.  The exact day is lost to time, so experts say that this is close enough.   :laugh-wuf: He wrote such works as, Hamlet, A Midsummers Night Dream, All's Well that Ends Well, Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caeser, King Lear, The Merchant of Venice, Twelfth Night; or Do What You Will, The Tameing of the Shrew, and so the list rolls on.  He also composed pomes, i think he wrote a book, and entertained royalt with his play's.  Now for some history.
He was born to the bailiff/clover, John and his wife Mary, of a small town somewhere in england.  He atended Stratford grammer schol, but he soon moved to the city when he was older.  He wrote his play's, scraped together a liveing, married twice after his first wife died, and had sevral children.  After the popularity of his plays caught on, he build the Globe Theater.  not only did Shakes[ear write plays only for his company, but he also acted in them ,and was a care taker of his theater.  He died on the same day he was presumedly born.

Anyway, i shall now proced to quote said play write.

"If we shadows have offended, Think but this and all is mended,
That you have but slumbered, while these visions did appear,
And this weak and idle theam, No more yeilding then a dream,
Gentles, do not reprehend: If you pardon, we will mend:
And, as i am an honest Puck, If we have unerand luck,
Now to 'scape the serpants toung, We will amends ere long;
Else the Puck a lier call: So good night unto you all.
Give me your hands if we be freinds, And Robin shall restore amends."
~ Puck/Robin Goodfellow of "A Midsummers Night Dream"

"We know what we are, but not what we may be." ~ Shakespear

"Alas, poor Youric(sp?), I knew ye well." ~ cant recall, hamlet perhaps?

These are the ones i can recall off the top of my head.  Anyone have any others?  And yes, i id memorize puck's lines, 'cause those are the best lines i've ever read.

The Hamlet quote you were trying to say is often misquoted.  Here is the correct version:
Alas, poor Yorick. I knew him, Horatio - a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy.

And there's this bit:
"I give unto my wife my second best bed with the furniture." --From the Bard's will.

yes, to bad.  BUt, let it be known, Shakespear was a perv!  There were numerouse sexual remarks and such in all of his plays.  in a midsumers night dream, this quote, "Do i entice you?" was acompianed by a little sugestive action, and made it way on to our production shirts!  XD

Production shirts? you do theater work Jake? and ya in some of the plays I've read for English by him are pretty funny XP espically when you got everyone in the class playing a role of each charcter. Because you never know what they will do XP like this one kid made sexual jokes about each part that we read when there was a break XD That was probally the first time I enjoyed reading any shakespear play.

I've studied a bit of Shakespeare in my time and some of his works are pretty good. Some quotes I can remember off hand (you should like the first one Drake!) :

" Come not between the dragon and his wrath! " - King Lear
" As flies to wanton boys are we to the Gods. " - King Lear
" I am a man more sinned against than sinning. " - King Lear
" You can't change the world but you can make a dent in it. "
" The one thing they love more than a hero is to see a hero fail. "
" Sometimes light is really dark. Sometimes good is really stark. Sometimes Winter feels like Spring. Don't think you know everything. "
" I prefer to think of it as misunderstood. Aren't we all? "

My old roommate had that bumper sticker on his door.
