Telling Your Friends
« on: August 26, 2008, 06:32:30 pm »
I've been a fur for a little while now but I've been keeping it a secret from my friends. They use sites like 4chan and such, so their view of furries is likely warped. Still, they're my closest friends and I hate keeping secrets from them. What do you think? Should I tell them or no? Have you told your friends?

(By the way I'm extremely new and this is my first post.  :blush-fox:)

Edit: Also, where and how would one meet some furries in real life without going to conventions?

Welcome to the site!  If you haven't already, please read the New Member Information.

As for your question, this has been discussed at length in numerous threads on the site.  The most recent one is here:  http://www.furryteens.org/forum/index.php?topic=3474.0

If your friends are the chan-tard types, they might not be the best ones to tell, but the best approach would be to just be yourself, without forcing the issue.

Have I told my friends?  Not really "told", but most of my RL friends are furs.  The ones who aren't know that I'm a nerd and a big fan of animals, which is about all they need to know about it, in my opinion.

EDIT:  1200 posts, yay!  [does a happy dance]

Well if that's the case then where would one meet some friends that are furries? I don't get to go to any cons because I'm still quite young yet and my parents wouldn't really understand the fandom...but it would be wonderful if I could.

Your parents don't have to understand the fandom, even if they come along.  Most furry cons are held in major cities with lots of other things to do besides the convention itself.

Where do you meet other furs IRL?  Well, I met all my friends at furmeets and cons :-P
Are you in the US?  There are large furry "communities" in Pittsburgh, Washington DC/Northern VA/Baltimore, and Los Angelos/San Francisco, and smaller ones in many other cities, including Houston, Chicago, and central Florida.

She apparently lives in the US's East Coast.
Is there much furry activity there?

Oh, yes!  Large furry groups in Pittsburgh and NoVA/MD, a medium-sized but highly active community in Philadelphia/New Jersey, a decent-sized community in central Florida, and various clusters of furs in Central PA, Boston, New York, and Virginia Beach.  Plus, cons in Pittsbugh PA, New Jersey, Connecticut, Atlanta GA, Orlando FL, and Alabama.

I tried telling my friends once. I doubt they understood what I was talking about.
Really, how on earth do you break this into conversation?
"I can't believe how much homework I got, and, by the way, I am interested in art of anthropomorphic creatures"
For me it sounds similar to
"I can't believe how much homework I got, and, by the way, I ate a banana for breakfast"

I think I ended up making a weird nonsensical statement that I babbled on about for a while and just trailed off on.
"Life's journey is not about arriving at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "Holy Shit, what a ride""
"Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means you are two steps ahead"
"Invoke not common sense, for it is not common"
"A life without joy is a wasted one, and you got but one to waste."
"To touch the clouds, you need to reach for the stars"

If they wonder, then I tell them.  But you know, most people get the point that there's SOMETHING up, seeing my art and all.
