Zone Of The Enders
« on: January 10, 2009, 01:21:30 am »

What is Zone of The Enders, AKA Z.O.E.? A game released back in 2001 by Konami from Hideo Kojima's development team. This game places you in the year AD 2167, the space colony Antillia. In this world of technology and long distance colonization of outer worlds, Earthlings have grown a disliking towards these colonists living on the edges of the system. Just as their name suggest, they are known as "Enders" and are looked on as outcasts in terran society.

Presently, there is a state of war spanning across the system, and it is unfortunately dragged to the poorly protected Antillia colony. You take on the role of a young boy named Leo Stenbuck, a reluctant and somber youth with a head full of bad memories and experiences. As Leo is escaping from the wreckage of the attack from the BRAHAM forces and shaking away a horrific sight of his only friends being crushed by a large machine, he finds himself thrown into the cockpit of a strange vehicle, code name "Jehuty", whereby he is greeted by the machine's combat AI system, ADA and thrown into battle as a one-man stand against BRAHAM forces to save his only home.

Okay, now to review it! This game itself is your typical hack and slash, find the item to open the door kind of game which can be rather amusing in its own right.

Graphics A
Absolutely stunning for a first generation PS2 game and considering its graphical standards it had exceeded for its day. This game was beautifully well rendered in every aspect it could attain. The visual effects to this day still bedazzle me.

Gameplay B
Simplistic, easy controls you can master in moments. The controls felt very fluid and combat couldn't be more entertaining with you spinning around the enemy from all conceivable angles. The combat method, however may get a little stale to some folks after a while since there's only so many ways you're able to attack the enemy, no fancy combos I'm afraid. It's all a test of skill and dexterity.

Story S
This game ranks extremely high in my opinion in story. Given that it hid so much from the player, it made a very unique impact on me unlike any other method a game could tell story in. BECAUSE it left me with unanswered questions and such an elegantly designed world, I think it deserves an S.

Difficulty C
Challenge in this game is a bit questionable overall. The enemy are always the same three mass produced units and their AI never really gets too difficult. Cheap at times, perhaps, but difficult, I nay say towards. The parts I find a challenge though is saving portions of the colony with survivors. One hit and a good chunk of your people you're trying to save die a gruesome laser fire death. The bosses were kinda so-so and didn't woo me in any way. Worst of all, the entire game doesn't dare test one's endurance in playing a long time because... It's really short. You'll average in about 5 to 6 hours of game play your first run.

Audio S
Okay, folks. I'm STILL listening to the intro theme on Winamp. This says something. I never usually get so stuck on music quite like how Z.O.E. has me. And believe me, it had me at intro. The music is beautifully well composed and executed, a tasty blend of electronica, j-pop, and some chorus in between make this beautifully executed. The sound effects also are bizarrely attractive in that whole sci-fi buzz sorta way. During your fights, the music will play it up a bit based on what you do exactly in the game and slightly synchronizes with the soundtrack a bit. A very cool effect.

Overall Grade A
Borderline S grade in my mind, but it just missed it because of the limited enemy variants and short game length. Konami! You came so close! I'll have to try out the sequel to see how far you've come since this game in Zone of The Enders - The Second Runner.

I seriously recommend giving this game a try. It's no longer in rental circulation, so you'll have to order it online or buy a used copy. By now, a copy's very very affordable. Got mine from GameStop for less than 4 dollars. If you're a collector of KCEJ games, you have to add this and its sequels to your list.

Umm, awesome review, but are you sure you linked to the right image?  That's a poster for a James Bond movie (Casino Royale, I believe, but my Russian is still a bit rudimentary)...

The sit must have did one of those anti-bandwidth blocker image replacements. One sec while I replace it... And done.

My friends all played it and loved it, told me to play.  But apparently, they all lost or sold their copies, so I can't borrow it. :(  Been keeping an eye out for it, might have to start actually looking, it sounds great.
