Repo! The Genetic Opera
« on: January 25, 2009, 10:37:09 am »
Repo! the Genetic Opera takes place in 2056. There's been an organ failure epidemic all over the world. GeneCo is founded, a company that offers organ replacement for a cheap price. But, if you don't pay on time, the Repo Man will come and kill, then reposes your GeneCo organ.
That brings us to Nathan Wallace. He's the Repo Man. Dun dun dun. He has a daughter name Shilo, who's infected by a blood disease that
she inherited from her mother, Marni, when she died.

(I was never meant to type out summaries, haha. You should be glad you got the short version.)
(And here's a trailer for people who went ??? when I did my summary! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzgpU25C6fg )

Repo! is the best movie I've seen. I'll admit it. I saw it (four times in one day, obsessed much?) and couldn't stop watching it.

I'll be straight up honest, though, a lot of you will definetly hate it. For some reason, people just haven't been receiving it well (especially the critics, so many of them are calling it the worst film of the year.) and if you're not a rock opera person, don't watch it. It'll be a waste of time. (But if you like mocks of cult classics, you might enjoy it.)
But, if you like that stuff, go for it! It reminded me of Sweeney Todd in many ways so if you liked that, I'd go for it.

Back to the review. Haha.
The cast was perfect. Paul Sorvino, Anthony Stewart Head, Sarah Brightman...
Music was fantastic. You'll walk away from the movie humming at least one song sometime in the day. They really stick to you.
It's also amazing to see what a good job they did with the movie on a crap budget.

I'll stop rambling! Overall, the movie is 5/5 to me. It's worth seeing it for the actors, if anything. Amazing cast. Great acting. Soundtrack is love.

Sorry if this ended up being TL;DR oO I got caught up in the awesomeness that is the movie haha

I have no idea what sort of problem critics had with this movie; but a ton of them write reviews based on stuff that no one cares about (film quality--wtf?).

Anyway, I think it's an amazing musical.

Thanks for the review, I've been curious about this movie but was wary because of the bad reviews. Now I'll probably buy it, thanks!

It's really not a bad movie, critics are just stuck-up and not used to movies like this. Really, it's not every day we get rock operas.

But it's really worth the money.

I LOVED it!

I love the industrial/opera music. I love the well rounded cast: Anthony Stewart Head from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah Brightman from the original Broadway production of Phantom of the Opera, Ogre from awesome band Skinny Puppy (fitting since the musical is industrial-influenced), and I was even suprised that Paris Hilton did a decent job.

The only con to me is that it seems like they cut some of the storyline out. It seems like they could have gone more in depth with the Zydrate storyline, and one of the songs during the credits leads me to believe they cut some of the storyline for time.

One thing I found amusing that might not be noticed by many is that in the relationship between the two men and Marni, there is a very noticable parelell to a 1927 silent film called Metropolis, which was one of the very first sci-fi films. Little things like that made me smile.

@Flinch- Apparently, uncut, the movie is somewhere between two and three hours long. But they had to cut it per-producers and general time.

I CAN HAS SPOILERS? YES YOU CAN HAS.

There was a whole subplot that Nathan kept dead Marni in the.. hall? I guess, that's who he was kinda.. singing to in Legal Assassin. At one point in the movie, Graverobber breaks into the house and steals her body, and makes Shilo realize "okay, this is your mom, and your father killed her". The song played in the credits, which I assume you mean, is Needle Through a Bug, where Shilo has to go through a bunch of challenges to find her cure (in between We Started This Op'ra Shit and... Let the Monster Rise) and one part she's with Graverobber and he actually makes her take some Zydrate from Marni.

Sorry I kinda rambled there haha

SPOILERS BE GONE!

I <3 Pavi.
he really does steal all the hearts :|
...
It's weird that I found him.. kinda hot? xD

Thank you for the explanation! I kind of felt like it was supposed to be longer, and that song at the end obviously was meant to be part of the film. Maybe someday they'll release a full length version?

I don't think it's weird, I LOVED Pavi (maybe because he's the lead singer of a band I love). I kind of have a thing for guys in masks, and all his faces looked like masks <3
