Signature Guidelines

(1/3) > >>

Meadow Whisper (Natasha):
Signatures are a great way to express yourself, but they need to be within a reasonable size to avoid distracting from your posts.  So, when creating your signature, please follow these guidelines.

For starters, total height should be about 100px (around 5 lines of text).  Please don't use signature images taller than that, and if you have a 100px tall image, avoid adding text lines below it unless absolutely necessary.

Width is pretty subjective, since it varies based on browser window size, and it doesn't really affect scrolling.  However, please keep signature images less than 600px wide.  Total signature width should never exceed 800-900px.

Since signatures can be publicly viewable, and show up in every post you make, please keep signature content PG-13.

File size isn't usually a huge priority, and we don't have any specific rules regarding it, but please keep signature image sizes reasonable.  This is to improve site performance, and help out members visiting the site from mobile devices or from countries where internet connections are metered.  For example, highly detailed/lengthy animated GIFs are often pretty huge, and should be used sparingly.

Lastly, make sure your signature image is hosted on a reliable server with reasonable loading times, and which allows hotlinking, to improve site performance.

If any of these provisions are violated, you'll receive a forum warning (without an increase in "warning level", though) notifying you that this needs to be corrected.  If the signature is still in violation after 24 hours, your signature will be removed by a staff members.  Excess signature length is not a cause for a ban or anything, but could result in disciplinary action if this policy is habitually violated.

Meadow Whisper (Natasha):
UPDATE:  The original post has been re-written to clarify our signature rules.  Please read it carefully.  If you have questions about your specific signature, contact a staff member.  This thread will remain unlocked for now, if anyone has specific policy-related questions, but irrelevant posts will be removed.

Meadow Whisper (Natasha):
UPDATE:  I thought this fad died, which is why it's not currently part of the thread, but "forum pets" (like the ones from chickensmoothie) are strictly forbidden, because they're always too large for our signature guidelines, they're irrelevant and a bit spammy, and they really only serve to promote the site they came from.  So, please don't use them.

Also, I've had to send a LOT of warnings about signature length recently, so this is a reminder to read this thread before creating your signature.  The staff get really tired of having to send warnings, check signatures, and edit profiles on a nearly-daily basis.  Thank you.

Hey everyone! Bumping this thread due to a handful of tall signatures I've been seeing lately.

To give an easy reference of what 100px comes out to, here's a 100px x 100px box.

A little bit over isn't bad, but significantly over that needs to be condensed a bit despite how cool it may be!

Re-bumping, there's been a lot of people over lately and I'd hate to slam everyone with a warning.
And yes, the forum does re-size images, but if you have one that's massively over, re-sizing it yourself is super helpful.
