Dissidia Final Fantasy
« on: August 24, 2009, 02:03:25 am »
A portable fan service for the PSP, Dissidia is a game that combines aspects of a fighting game and an RPG, revolving around a conflict between the gods of harmony and discord, Cosmos and Chaos, respectively.
Featuring over 20 playable characters from the original ten Final Fantasy games (one hero and villain from each, as well as two secret characters taken from XI and XII), the game makes use of techniques that every character utilized in their respective games, which can be customized upon gaining sufficient experience, and performed using a simple shift of the analng stick and one of the attack buttons.
The fighting system makes use of the controls fluently, with SQUARE being a Brave Attack (used to reduce/steal an opponent's 'Bravery', which determine the strength of their defense from an opposing technique), CIRCLE being an HP Attack (used to deal damage and can link into Brave Attacks, depending on the move), TRIANGLE used to take advantage of the field (icons appear on the stages, and pressing TRIANGLE triggers mobility ranging from running up walls to grinding on rails/edges), and X to jump. L is used to lock-on, while R can be combined with other buttons for extra effects (i.e., R+TRIANGLE triggers a zoning dash, R+X triggers a dodge, R+SQUARE triggers a transformation, called EX Mode).
Characters fight in a 3D environment with full freedom of movement in a destructible environment, and stages often have secondary effects that can be used against characters, and are well-made for a PSP game. Character models are also decent, with English voice acting to boot.
Overall, the game can feel unresponsive at times, and many attacks are a bit long in its active state, paving the way to be wide-opened and susceptible to punishing moves. The story mode consists of nothing more than a board game that can feel repetitive, but hopefully the RPG element can keep a player interested.
Unfortunately, the game features no online play (or is that fortunate?), but at least I can pit the likes of Cecil against Cloud.

I Really need to buy a psp, if for nothing other than this.  :sad-fox:
from the gameplay vids, this looked incredible. I didn't even know about the rpg aspects.
Great review!

Thankies!
The PSP's been producing less and less games nowadays, so beware.
There's also a PSP bundle, which includes a silver (?) PSP, a 2GB memory stick, a copy of Dissidia, and a copy of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (if I remember right.) :3

That bundle, I want. I don't think I got the monies at the moment though :(
I'm hoping that the psp's game situation might change with the psp go.
Even if it is $50 cheeper than a ps3(lol), it might attract attention to the psp.
I'll just have to wait and see.

-Edit
I just saw your birthday thing at the bottom of the page.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOMMORROW

(Shhh... Thank you but no thread about it please, I have a bad association with the 26th of this month..)

Awesome, Mudd -hugs- The demo was already out with 5 playable characters, including Onion Knight, Cecil, Terra, Cloud, and Sephiroth, so it's enough of a buffer until you can get the game (I still have the demo and play it often myself, lol)

ILU 2 MUDDY

American version has a few more tweaks than the Japanese version along with a new mode and more balanced gameplay. :]

I loved Onion Knight in this one, but I hate that it has no online play. :/ Leveling up is a drag too, but I found several ways to make it less of a hassle. :3
