Art Review; Draw Furries
« on: December 12, 2009, 10:20:01 pm »
Draw Furries By Jared Hodges and Lindsay Cibos Came out in early december. So my girlfriend (being the wonderful woman she is) got me a copy for christmas.

I figure that some people may be interested in buying it so I figured i'd review it. I wan't sure if this would go under art or reviews, as it is both, it said books under reviews, so I assume this is the right place to put this.

Ok. First off, fox fans beware, you have only one page in this 127 page book. To give them credit though, its the first thing you see after humans... So thats always a bonus.

So the book is seperated into chapters based on species. The first chapter is felines, the second is canines, then equines, then rodents, then birds, then extra things like clothes and wings and such, Then how to color properly and then how to use things such as perspective.

Every species chapter starts with how to draw the head and eyes (a two page step by step discription and drawing) Then a full body drawing lesson (also two page), then the features page (for your dogs twirly tails and such.. Also two page), Then how to draw action poses (two page again) [I'm holding a camera! WOW!!!], then two pages for variations... For things like boxers or zebras or things, only 4 per group, and only two have sketches to work off of. And then the morphology pages (2) they all have a mostly human on one half (with parts of the group, such as a cat girl.) and a mostly animal page (such as the bird they use).

Now I havn't read too much of it, but the drawings are enough for most experienced artists (or people with experience with these sorts of books) to get a good grasp of how to draw what they're trying to draw. But I would think that if this book was read top to bottom anyone whos taken an art class could probably start drawing at a decent skill. But I do have to admit, there is only one real style to all this, that being a semi-anime semi-realistic view of everything. Excluding the mostly animal ones in the morphology section. So that could make things difficult for someone with a very different style. I will stop to mention that there is a small section on how to draw furries without clothes (no nudity) which I think is pretty good as far as showing how to draw most of it. The coloring section is in depth enough to get you going and have an idea on what you should do for moods lighting and such... The perspective and settings chapter is also decent enough to get you going. And then at the end there is an guest gallery (my favorite part) And thats the book.

The people who did this book do mostly anime, so their style of furry drawing is also anime-ish.

Overall its a decent book and my girlfriend (who thinks she sucks) did a drawing in an hour better than almost anything I've ever drawn, so even beginners should like this book. It manages to walk the thin line neccisary to make both newbie and journyman artists feel like the book was worth it. Amazon is selling the book for $20 (thats with the cost of basic shipping) So its not too expencive if your looking for a cheap gift. Just type in draw furries and it'll be the first one that pops up. :) Well, thats my first review. I like it and I hope you guys do too. Welp.... Time to go practice my drawing again.

If anyone else has or gets this book feel free to post what you think of it here... Kinda like a multi-review page, just to save space....

Kinda feel like it lends us some legitimacy. Heh, maybe we'll get a new generation of fandomites who didn't come for Krystal porn! Whoohoo!

I looked at the preview on Amazon...
I would love to learn how to draw... (Art seems a bigger part of the fandom than writing...)

First parts then perspective?  Seems backwards to me....idunno.  I haven't been practicing my arts much lately, so I'm roughly where I was last month; that is, able to draw a half decent cube.  I often try to draw people, but they have an annoying habit of moving.  I might come to school with a camera.......better idea!  I'll download some photographs.  No better time to think of that than with internet, I'll do that now.

Back on topic.......yeah.  It's definitely worth a look.  I'd buy it if I had $15, but I'm pretty much broke.

Ugh I went to buy the book today... was 23$ at my store without tax, rawr... Barnes and Noble.com lied, said it was 16$, I'm somewhat broke right now only had like 20$ left, due to buying Christmas presents to my friends... Looked like a good book though, previewed it and read it/etc while I was in the store though, the art style looks nice ^.^, and how it was written/etc, nice book, once I get some a little more money I'm going to be buying it :3, store clerks can't just let you off with that extra 5$'s worth....

Barnes and noble .com only has the member only prices, which are reduced/normal prices. So Always check to see if thats the member cost or the actual cost.

Oh opps, well then I guess it's my mistake XD, not the websites!

EDIT*

Meep! I got the book today, my younger brother got it for me, as my early Birthday present as I bought him something and he felt guilty not having given me anything, and that I didn't have enough to buy it. So yah I got it, and well it's quite nice!

I plan on getting this on friday, I saw it at my local Barnes and noble. Would it be at borders? (I can walk to borders, Id have to walk across the most dangerous, multilevel, circle/rotary in the tri-county area to get to Barnes and noble)
