Well, lets just say I am waiting on an email from the British Ministry of Justice, to see what their laws say, and what action can be taken.

Macs don't just ***ing work, for the record.

It never hurts to seek out more than one avenue of pursuit. If push comes to shove, it's just that much more information we might have needed rather than found useful in the end. I cannot do law much online; what I learned I learned under fire and threat of imprisonment. However, it's the part where a huge favor can come in a well thought out and reasonable answer to a question. For me, that's a couple that has ruined, rebuilt, and even helped me create my life in many different ways - both with law degrees and high honors - and neither knowing me personally until just recently.

edit: Redundancy.

If they don't get back to you soon, I'll call them, my landline plan has dirt-cheap international calling (I just can never figure out how to dial those weird European numbers :-P )

Nice signature banner ya got there.

Mr. Fogg's reply can be boiled down to a single link:

http://www.justice.gov/criminal/cybercrime/reporting.htm

Apparently, though he's aware of where to look for resources on such material, he's never pursued such things himself. I am unsurprised, but it never hurts to try.

As for the link, ask him if that's who we should contact about a site that is hosted on servers within the US, BUT lists its owner as someone in the UK?

Haha, password trafficking; US Secret Service. Genius. We should get MI6 on the case while we're at it, too.

Oh dear... Natasha, I'm afraid that's the most that Mr. Fogg can give us. He knows less about computers than my tutoring students.

Well, it's not really a computer question, it's an issue of jurisdiction.  But thanks anyway.

Also, I can't believe I have to say this, but if you know what site we're talking about, don't go there!  Not only are you supporting the "enemy" with ad revenue and traffic, but it's inappropriate content for pretty much everyone here.  And, well, you're not missing anything, it's the same generic stuff as every other similar site.

Ok, I have hit a bit of a snag here...
The bill I was looking for was the Computer Misuse Act of 1990....
However, it adresses misusing programs to try to hack and such...

Further reading is needed.

She's talking about the people who stupidly look at this article and go "HUR HUR I WANDUR WUT THIS FURBIDDED (LAWL FURREE JAWK) WEBSYTE IZ ILL GOO CHECK IT OOT" And find themselves staring into the maws of thousands of hairy cha-chas, all of them burning into innocent child minds. Like Natasha said, you can actually have it so it redirects to this site. Just see earlier in the topic. :3

*sigh*

I'll write another message to Mr. Fogg on query of jurisdiction. His wife would be more up that alley (criminal judge for this region), but he's still the person to send that to.

Well, I would like to say that I finally found the book I needed...
I would like to say it, but sadly even using that does not give me all the info I need in this...

I may be busy this weekend, so as soon as I can, I am sniffing out any leads I can find on the web.

Well, I hope this is taken care of. It caused me problems when I tried to tell a friend, and he went to the wrong site, and blamed me. I got it straightened out, but it was bad.

All three of us are still working on it off and on, Haddock. If you skim through this thread, there's a fairly quick way of solving the problem for yourself, permanently. However, as it stands, me and Mr. Fogg are going back and forth, Natasha is almost certainly trying, and DAS didn't get his award for sitting on his laurels. These things take time and a bit of knowledge, not "BOOM! THIS IS THE LAW AND YOU ARE OUT OF HERE BUDDY!"

... Metaphysical property != material property. The way I take it, it's hosted in one country and owned from another.

Come to think of it, Natasha! Hello!

:natasha:

Why not press suit against the hosts of the site? Not the owners, but whoever is hosting the server with the site on it?... Or did you already get there ages before my overworked brain caught that idea?

The thing is, by doing that, you can at least cause a bit of disruption. Essentially, point to the laws that we know work in the US and go "Hey, this dude is running something illegal right here naow." Press it against the server hosts, not the owners, and this is again getting too wordy and I'll stop before I confuse myself.

Why not press suit against the hosts of the site? Not the owners, but whoever is hosting the server with the site on it?

1.  In order to do that effectively, I have to be able to point to specifically what's illegal about it.  That's the part we're trying to figure out.  Datacenters generally don't have knee-jerk responses to anything except child porn, and if something like this doesn't come from a lawyer (or sound like it came from one), they won't do anything.

2.  Unless someone here has rich parents who want to help out, or a pro-bono lawyer handy, I can't afford anything beyond advice from my usual lawyer.

3.  The datacenter hosting the site in question is a massive multi-national corporation, and they're only liable for illegal content on the server itself, not the domain, which is the problem here.  Technically, there's nothing illegal on the site itself, it's the domain that's a problem.

Anyway, thanks for the reply.
