Favourite Classical Music?
« on: May 18, 2010, 07:50:10 pm »
Been getting more into classical music lately, curious as to if anyone has any favourites in that field.

I'm quite fond of Wagner's Flying Dutchman Overture, Gustav Holt's 'Mars: The Bringer of War', from his symphony 'The Planets', and Strauss' famous Also Sprach Zarathustra tone-poem (think 2001: A Space Odyssey)

I'm still exploring though! ^_^

I don't really like classical music...but, I know that Dream Theater has used "Also Sprach Zarathrustra" for openers at their concerts, which is cool. Wow...I really just mixed metal with a classical music conversation. Go me!

:P Nice job, Schism.

Richard Wagner (composer) has actually been cited as a hugeee influence on modern-day metal, so he might be worth checking out ;).
And part of the reason I love Holt's 'Mars: The Bringer of War' is because it's sooo effing epic and bombastic -- probably the most 'metal' classical song I've heard so far, in my opinion :P. Strauss sort of fits into that mold, a little bit, as well. Hell, Also Sprach Zarathrustra begins with this really doomy, low bass rumble (contrabass, I believe..)

I really like Mozart's requiem, and Carl Orff's Carmina burana. Also, If you call it classical because it is done by only symphony instruments, then the Passacaglia trio from Battlestar Galatica, and the Prophet ascends from the C&C4 soundtrack, done by the London Philharmonic.

I really like Perpetual Motion or the Tritsch Tratsch Polka, both by Strauss. Camptown Races- the original score by Foster, without lyrics- is really good... Oh, and Beethoven's Fifth and Habanera by Bizet are both classics that I'm guilty of enjoying a lot as well.
And that's why they call me Duino Duck- Drake of Daring, Mandarin of Magnificence, Water Fowl of West Seattle!

Hmm,

I like Tchaikovsky, Holst, Bach, Liszt (does he count as classical?), Paganini, Hayden, and a few others.  I won't even bother to list some of the pieces I listen to...

I've been listening to a lot of Holst recently because we've played two pieces by him my orchestra (St. Paul's Suite and Jupiter from The Planets.

I'm a fan of Paganini(one of the original shredders!), Rimsky-Korsakov, Beethoven, & some John Cage stuff.  As for more modern stuff, I really like Nobuo Uwematsu.

One thing I've found really interesting is that Jon Lord composes now.  From Deep Purple to the orchestra, it's a bit of a change.

I listen to alot of classical music. I'm going to University for classical clarinet performance next year though.

I like Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Weber, and Sibelius alot, then a massive amount of clarinet music.
Nixon in China, by John Adams, is really good.

To be honest, I can't remember who wrote what. I don't even know what the names are to most of them. But anyway, I like just about any classical music. Especially Mozart, Vivaldi, and Bach.

I was sorta expecting someone to say that.  You're right, I do like his stuff a bit.

And it doesn't really suprise me you wanted me on this thread, even if just to make that joke.
