I kind of thought up furries on my own before I knew anything about the fandom. I was a very big fan of the Redwall books by Brian Jacques, which are about a fantasy world inhabited by animals that are  basicaly furries. I was comming up with all kinds of stories and stuff in my head which involved these "furries". I was also doing alot of drawings of the characters from the books and some of characters of my own,  and was curious to see if I could find redwall art online. So, after a few google searches and a bit of further research into these furry things i was finding, I discovered that I wasn't the only one out there who liked anthropomorphic animals, and infact there was a whole fandom just for furries! I thought I was more normal (I wasn't the only one) and weirder (I was spending my time drawing and looking at pictures of animal-people) at the same time after that.
If we treat people as they are, we make them worse. If we treat them as they ought to be, we help them become what they are capable of becoming.

We're not retreating, we're advancing in a different direction!

When I was 12 I saw Balto 2 on TV. I sat through and watched the entire thing without saying a word and my eyes didn't leave the screen. By the time the movie finished I churned memories through my head until I discovered I'd had this kind of emotional connection with anthropomorphic characters. Most likely brought on in early childhood. Anyway logged onto the nearest computer and found a Balto fan art site and then about an hour later I was on Fa. Found the word furry several times and spent the next couple of hours on wikifur. I ditched everything I learn't and it wasn't until I was 16 that I joined Furstralia and took an interest in the fandom.

So I found the furry fandom when I was 12 and didn't take interest until I was 16. I wrote a lot of furry fiction between then however.

I was kidnapped by a bunch of fursuiters and forced to stare at art endlessly until I joined.

When 1,000 ways to die first came out I saw what they said furries were which freaked me out quite a bit and then later on, someone I watched on youtube said he was a christfur (a christian furry) and he said that being a furry is okay with god. This confused me a great deal since the at the time, I thought the things furries did were pretty bad in the eyes of the christian god. I decided to look up what furries were so I had some clue what he was talking about, and then I slowly gained more and more interest in the fandom

Oh dear.

Weeellll... I have always been an animal lover and would always pretend to be one of the dogs (when we had them.) I would draw animals all the time. I was also terrible at art back then too. Influences could be blamed on cartoons and comics (always loved the Looney Tunes and Calvin & Hobbes is still one of my favorites.) I've read just about all of the Redwall series. And so, being an animal lover and always having the desire to be one, I wondered if there was any artwork that mixed human and animal characteristics together. A few Google Image searches and link clickings later, and I was introduced to the term 'Anthropomorphic'. I was interested in this and decided to look further. I joined DeviantArt not only to share art, but because that was where a lot of anthro (furry, whatever) art I found was on. I only later found out about the term 'Furry' and, again, with the help of Google, I looked up terms, this time for information. I discovered what being a furry meant and immediately thought "Gosh, I think I've been a furry this whole time and didn't know it." And, through different courses of events, I find myself here typing, a proud furry.

Just pointing out something with my post, I didn't look up the fandom as a result of that video clip for what it had in it. I thought that the stuff they showed was so unrealistic and scripted that it just made me curious to see what furries really were. I mean seriously. A fur pile in the middle of the Nevada Desert, and the commentator explaining everything is in a Winnie the Pooh costume. I mean, WTF.

Through the Bungie.net forums. There was a thread created with the intention of trolling members of the fandom. I myself was not aware of the fandom's existence until lurking that thread. With a flame-war starting and people having polarized views of the fandom, I decide to look it up myself and found out that it was not as bad as what the OP had claimed it was and found it quite interesting.

I decided to join the forum around the same time I discovered Furry Teens on June 26, 2010. It's not really interesting; I know. But at least I think it is more dignified than finding and joining the fandom solely for porn, I suppose.

Sadly thats how I found the fandom.... And that is what I used it for for a few weeks. Then I learned how it really is to be a furry.

I think its how most people here became interested in the fandom. Especially for those around the age of 14-17. Its a sad truth, but I think everyone here has mostly grown out of it. Sure, we probably have a few favorite adult pieces, but I'm sure anyone into anime has the same thing.

I'm not saying everyone became interested in the fandom because of adult art, I just think many did.

I hope you both know I was only kidding. I'm not really that concerned how anybody joined the fandom or currently spends their time in it. I also have nothing against people our age viewing pornography. It was just a joke because I find my own introduction to the fandom to be overly simplistic. But I suppose it is less awkward than saying than saying I found it through the porn in an alternative scenario.

I misunderstood what "furry" meant, I thought it was a support group for overtly hairy men.

I first learned about it on some Sonic related forum when I was about 12-13. I guess I kind of was a furry then, I did pretend to be anthropomorphic animals with my friends back then. I did not think nor have anything to do with the fandom until I had just turned 15. I've always loved anthropomorphic animals and stuff like that since I was a young child and I think I LITERALLY must have remembered it. I googled something crazy like "Make a wolf character" (or something along those lines). I went through a few pages, as if it was some "official business" to have a fursona to be in the fandom xD. I eventually came across Furry Teens, saw it was a forum and was like "Wow, other people with this specialised interest!". I joined and then started posting the day afterwards and from then on I declared myself a furry. I chose the name Mikune from the Anthro character I played as when I was 12, so I've had the name Mikune for like 6 years :D.

We have so many threads on this but wow I'm still suprised how many people found it via internet on accident, I found it in a teen girl magazine that a friend showed me.
They got the original article from 'Sugar' which is a UK magazine I think??

it's... a bunch of sugar coated BS, really. but when I was 13 dressing up like a super cute kawaii dog was the best thing so.
Originally I was only in it for the costumes and had no interest in the drawings (furry porn is just eww eww and completely put me off) but now it's the other way around.
Does anyone actually know the girl who was featured in this? I found who a few of the suiters were, but I still can't find Skye. :<

I used to have a nasty habit of TF art, so I went to a website that had art. I noticed the artist had a "fursona", so I was like, "WTF is a fursona?" So I looked it up. And I found FA, but I didn't think I was ready for that, so I looked 3 links down the search page and found this site. So hear I am.
I return from the dead like Lazarus... just without the wrappings and rotting flesh. Not cool.

Awesome deviant art picture found through google images, anime and a lifelong interest in the concept of walking, talking animals to begin with.

I was browsing youtube for flash animations and came across one called The Rockoons, and the artist was this thing called a furry. So i google searched it and i never looked back. And thats mostly the reason why i'm a wolfcoon, because in the animation the raccoons were quite wolfly!
